For some reason I decided to throw together a small group of Tallarns. I thought their smocks would look good painted in a camo pattern. I've always liked the Denison Smock "paint brush stroke" type of cam and so thought I'd try to apply that to the Tallarn figures. (Not as easy as I thought it would be). I found this design on the net. Out of all the choices I liked it best, Not as easy to apply to the figures as I hoped gue to all the equipment but I did my best. I had to put this pic in for one reason. The expression of the guy in the middle looks like he just farted ... but ... a bit more came out other than just a fart !!!

So ... I tried but they still look a bit crap. I know they still could benefit from a wash and I will as soon as I'm convinced I've got the colours right. Took on all tips you guys have left before, thinning paint etc. but still don't feel too happy about the result.
Eyes. All look like they've done a shovel of coke !!! The skin colour is the old GW tanned flesh which I thought would be perfect but ... do they look a bit like "Barbie Doll" skin tone?
Wondered if and how I should make the skin look more ... real ?
I feel there's more room for improvement but I just can't put my finger one it (or them). All critic / advise will be taken well as I am a big boy.
Also may be a bit drunk.

Skin looks like an 80s robot's flesh, the kind that is supposed to look synthetic. But that's not surprising given that it has no highlights and hasn't been washed yet. I'd highlight it now, maybe mix a little white or a lighter flesh tone with the current one, then see what work it needs after the washes.
Otherwise I think the main problem is that the olive colour is just far too dominant. Looking at the camo pattern ythe three colours are about even, maybe there is less of the yellowy olive colour than the other two.
I think the armour and guns are contributing to that problem, looking again they look like a slightly darker colour, something you can emphasise after washing but right now they really flow into the olive dominated camo without definition adding to the problem.

I agree that a wash will help add some contrast, and you can then go back in an add some highlights to further break up dominant colors. The old Tallarn minis do have a great amount of potential for doing camo schemes, since they have broad areas of fabric and folds to capture washes to lend depth. One question: Did you paint over an existing paint job on these minis? I noticed that it looked like some of the details have "blobbed out." It might be worth stripping them (lurves the old metal minis because they are easy-peasy to strip), applying a new primer coat, and then re-painting from there... Here's something I did about 12 years ago to some old metal Tallarns to turn them into Traitor Guard/Plague Cultists: Attachment Deleted

You know Trooper, if you were of a mind to mess around with technical paints then Nurgle's Rot would look great on those.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I thought I got the camo balance just right bearing in mind that I'm not especially after a scheme for a totally baron desert. More for a semi-arid type of place ... like parts of southern Italy or Spain can be. I did copy the first image as closely as I could. Colours, ratio and design because I wanted the Iconic "Denison Smock" pattern.
I think I know what you mean about the colour of the gun and armour. Are you saying that they should contrast more with the smock? The smock yellow, gun and armour are actually three different colours as I was trying to get a bit of contrast but they turned out to be too similar.
I do hope the wash will sort that all out though.
I did actually try to have the colour scheme with as few different colours as possible. Turned out I used 13 !!! Not including undercoat or washes !!! THIRTEEN !!! utter madness
Three were already undercoated and I undercoated two of them but I can't remember which ones. But I know what you mean by some detail being "blobbed out". I am using thinned out paints so unsure why that's happening.
O.K. Action plan based on what you've said. Apply a wash (I may try more than one depending on which part of the model is being washed). Drybrush edges. Do you think a drybrush of buff or bleached bone would work on the smock and shemagh? I think the wash alone will add depth to the gun and kit.
Not quite drunk yet but working on it.

Apart from re-doing the "spaced out eyes". I refer you to Trooper "Poopy-Pants" in my last picture I'd like to try giving them a facial stubble. Like a 5 O'clock shadow. I've seen in on some SM Scouts somewhere on the web. Anyone know the best way to do this?
And any help doing eyes will be appreciated too.
Still not drunk yet.
