Hi Everyone,
I am playing a friendly match against a lad who is learning 40k.
He is fielding:
10 Guardians + Scatter Laser Weapon Platform
5 Windrider Jetbikes each with Shruiken Cannons
A Farseer on Jetbike
5 WraithGuard with D-Scythes
1 Wave Serpent with Shruiken Cannons and Scatter Lasers
1 War Walker with Eldar Missile Launcher and Scatter Laser
He has asked to fight against an infantry horde.
I am thinking along the lines of this:
CCS 1 + GL x 4
Platoon 1 PCS x 4 Flamer SQ 1 } SQ 2 } 1 commissar + 3 sergeant with power weapon, combined SQ 3 }
Platoon 2 PCS x 4 GL SQ 1 } SQ 2 } SQ 3 } All: GL + ML + 1 squad has Commisssar, combined SQ 4 } SQ 5 }
Total 800
I am not trying to be competitive, I like this list as I have used it since 5th ed and found most opponents like fighting it.
I am trying really hard not to put a MoO or spam loads of mortars.
really hard.
I welcome thoughts!

It looks OK. Autocannon and lascannon would be my weapons of choice VS Eldar. GL, flamers and m/ls tend to suck. Really m/ls only suck bad in 7th because everyone was spamming them like crazy in 6th.
If you want especially sucky units vs Eldar try using Rough Riders. No that RR are bad but they're useless VS highly manoeuvrable opponents and great VS drop podding marines.
Power axes and all those sort of close combat upgrades are also likely to drain your points and make your opponents list more efficient.
For a laugh try using a scout sentinel heavy list. Sents are cheap but easily destroyed and are useful for the outflanking ability. Should keep them on their toes.

It looks to me like your elder friend is going to walk over your list. He is faster, has better shooting and is harder to kill. You have nothing that can really deal with a waveserpent and are putting a lot of points into weapons that will never be in range. I'd suggest taking two blobs both kitted out for shooting with either auto cannons or lascannons, a CCS with a vox and a standard to give reliable orders, and your PCSs full of flamers to try and keep him at a distance. Something like this
CCS: Vox, Standard, MoO, Lascannon
PCS: 4x Flamers ISx4 : autocannon x4, vox, commissar
PCS: 4x Flamers ISX4: autocannon x4, vox, commissar
You could also drop one IS from each platoon and bring in a psyker for prescience. This should be a closer game

I should probably add that we are likely to be playing in store where the largest tables is 4 x 4.
I expect to have a hard fight with this list, however the lad is a complete novice with about 2 games (against me) under his belt; usually I assist him with his tactics though in this game he will be acting solo. With that in mind I expect him to make lots of errors which will compensate for the weakness in my list.
I'd rather him curb stomp me and increase his willingness to play than win (even if it is a close win).
I am debating the regimental standard and MoO though.

Right, I think the power weapons are a waste, that amount of points could be spent on another infantry squad.
Jet bikes will try and fly around you, some heavy Bolters or autocannons should sort this out!
Wraith guard also, auto cannon should get these guys.
I would surgest squads with missile launchers heavy Bolters or auto cannons and grande launchers.
The Serpant will need nocking out also, so I would think a auto cannon squad and perhaps and lass cannon or Missile launcher squad.
Tell you a good tank for small points value games... Chimera. I realise it's a transport. But even without guys in the back, the two heavy Bolters (or one and Multi-laser) and a stubber make a fab eldar killed!

In the end I think I did swap out the power weapons, I took a master of ordnance instead.
I strongly rate the effectiveness of massed lasgun fire, I also found the missile launchers to be brilliant at killing everything I wanted them to so while I hear the mutliple comments regarding autocannons I'll be sticking with missiles for now.
Also - by keeping to infantry I deny all the anti-tank weapons from being effective!

Agreed!
My 2k army list has 4 missile heavy weapon squads and only one Lascannon.
The missile launcher is fantastic! Almost as good at taking out armour but can switch to killing infantry.
I suppose the heavy Bolter and auto cannon could also be compaired in the same way. The heavy Bolter in really only good against infantry. The auto cannon, like the ML can swap roles and take out the light armour.
I am quite stricked against officer and srg upgrades. It adds up to a load of points and lets face it what good can they really do with a Boltgun or power weapon etc? Guard are mass troop, mass heavy weapon and quality tanks not heros.
That's what makes them all heros!

I appreciate the auto-cannon for its cheapness, S7 ap4 is really handy and I have had good experiences, however I just love missile launchers, especially now they can upgrade to flakk.
The list is an old 1000 point 5th ed non-competitive list, the power weapons were boosted by a priest and more commissars which turned it into a close combat monster (if it made it to the target).
This games shows that it does work better as a forward gunline rather than a crazy charging meatblob.

How do you find the commissars?
In all my time I've never really used them. I am about to run one in my list?
I agree missile dose everything and does everything well.

I always play commissars with my conscript blobs. I play dark angels a lot and It prevents loosing a whole blob to a loss from an assault troops sweeping advance, with the the added bonus of still being able to go to ground behind an ageis defence line.

Commissars are good for a unit which will take a lot of hits, you can rely on them to hold their position.
They can also be given some nice toys if you feel the need.
Mainly they are worth it if you have a large platoon, I wouldn't consider it for less than 30 men.

Yeah, I have a plain commissar I was going to stick into a infantry blob.
