G’day all!
I come to you all with a project of epic proportions!-well not really, but it’s still pretty awesome
Please endeavour to hear this proposition out!
After reading supplements such as the Siege of Vraks Trilogy I’ve had the idea to create another supplement that could be used in a social, non-tournament environment. The intent is to create a planetary system with its own background, planetary data, history, exports, key figures, PDF and unit entries that is compiled into a single, printable publication. The document would be saved as a PDF and be free to download for other hobbyists to use.
I’ve seen it done once before and the team that did it had created their own artwork, fluff, special rules, unit entries and even painted models for their colour scheme and included them as pictures. It was incredible. Essentially the document was what you would expect a supplement for Catachans, Vostroyans or Tallarans to look like. This supplement would be aimed at providing an Imperial Guard force with Inquisitorial elements who specialise in fighting Papa Nurgle and his minions.
I’d really like to undertake a project like this and am putting out a call for other enthusiasts who want to jump on board and be a part of the Design Team. I come from a medical and project manager background and am aware of my limitations and hope to get some expertise off other individuals to do this endeavour justice.
If anyone wants to jump on board and be a part of the team please let me know and spread the word to your mates on other forums! Anyone who is able to make a meaningful contribution to this production will be listed as a key contributor in the opening pages and will get the opportunity of having a quote listed with their name and role. There will also be another smaller list for 'Mentioned in Dispatches' for people who provide the odd piece of advice in forums but weren’t a part of the official Design Team.
Positions that can be undertaken include:
-Editor
-Cover Artist
-Photographers
-Designers
-Rules Developers
-Game Testers
-40K Folk Lore Guru
-Intergalactic Space Expert
-Painters
-Minister for Peace and War-or whatever other cool title you want to give yourself
The aim is to have a hard copy printed by Christmas 2016. Everyone on the Design Team will get a free, colour printed and bound copy that will be numbered and personalised. I will set up a free online program/forum where all contributions can be tracked and managed from. If it goes really well, we could even do a follow on publication for the opposing evil force…but for the time being let’s just tackle this one step at a time.
Anyone interested yet??
The broad scheme for the fluff currently consists of this scribbling that I’ve devised on multiple train rides…
Anthrax IV (Name of planet: TBC) was first colonised in ___(Insert date)_____ in the _______ (Insert Sector)___.
This moon/star served as a security buffer to Anthrax Prime, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII and offered significant protection to these planets from frequent Ork incursions. Although initially intended to act as a breeding ground for Ogryns and abhuman workers to supply to the nearby manufactorum planets, these organisms proved quite valuable in their new role of combatting Orks and providing the planet with an appreciated hammer to fight back with.
Under a succession of valiant and triumphant commanders, massed ogryn charges backed by the might of the PDF repulsed every zeno wave that ever achieved planet fall. Continuous victories in the face of fierce odds cultured an air of confidence and arrogance. A strong, self-praising Ecclesairy presence only compounded this issue and gradually faith and oaths of loyalty were being misdirected from the Emperor to the overconfident but successful ruling military class.
In an attempt to ensure continuing martial power and guarantee success on the battlefield, biogenetic experiments were conducted to enhance both human and abhuman performance. This practice, though comparable yet inferior to Adeptus Astrates engineering , achieved incredible results. Ogryns developed resounding resilience and would fight on despite horrendous wounds. Humans received a course of various concoctions that increased muscle mass, improved respiratory function and even altered the composition and viscosity of blood thereby allowing fatal haemorrhaging to rapidly clot. In their eyes, Anthrax IV was the peak in human perfection and deserved likening to Space Marines but to others it was an alarming pathway to heresy that had to be contained.
Recognising the need to eradicate the increasingly fanatical population of Anthrax IV, the Governor and ruling council of Anthrax III convened in secret to halt this cancerous heresy and prevent dooming the rest of the system from the harsh backlash of the Inquisition. Conceding that they could never succeed through direct conflict that would also attract attention, the council decided to use the impending and ominous Waaarrrggghhh Darkfall led by Warboss Gothnik as a veil for their intentions.
The plan was to sabotage Anthrax IV’s planetary defences in order to allow the majority of the Ork bulwark to achieve planet fall. Once this was done and with the Orks locked in combat, Anthrax III would raise a false request for Status Exterminatus on Anthrax IV in an attempt to contain the Ork invasion. The resulting response would see the planet virus bombed into infinity, killing all on its surface.
And so the mission of sabotage began. Key Commanders, Government Officials and Planetary Defence Technicians were constantly distracted, called away to other planets and even met untimely deaths in a covert assassination program. Missile batteries were sabotaged, Imperial Navy patrols were diverted into ineffective positions in order to deny situational awareness and trading between Anthrax III and IV became suddenly difficult thereby denying valuable resources. All of this weakened the defences of Anthrax IV with whispers of foul play by hidden enemies amounting. Nonetheless, they decided to meet the Orks on the battlefield as they had on so many other occasions in a display of military might and perseverance.
The green tide landed in numbers unheard of! With minimal interception, the greenskins struck the two main continents in simultaneous pincer movements and were making alarming success within 97hours. By dawn, key defences had been seized and vast swathes of territory were overrun. However, with characteristic cunning and military prowess, hidden elements emerged from behind the Ork frontlines and were striking back with devastating efficiency. This was a major blow to the xeno invasion and the tides of battle were indeed turning. Then, just as optimism was beginning to take place the fatal transmission was detected:
From: Anthrax IV
To: Anthrax III
Message: All is lost. Greenskins have overrun planet. Total destruction imminent. Entire Waagghh has made planet fall and we are currently struggling to contain the threat. Request immediate Exterminatus. We will fix the enemy in place in order to guarantee complete annihilation. Blessed be the Emperor.
The trap had been detected and the fate of Anthrax IV sealed. The moment this time delayed message was sent to Anthrax III all the evidence necessary to justify this sudden planetary demise was had. The besieged defenders swore an oath against the rest of their system for betraying them in their darkest hour after years of service.
Anthrax III responded immediately with pre-positioned ships unleashing their noxious payloads. Orks, humans and abhumans alike wilted and died in agonising death throes. Skin sloughed off muscle, muscle degenerated into liquid waste and blood morphed into useless sludge. Whatever fighters from both sides could fled underground in an attempt to survive the pervasive, lingering cloud.
Foul living conditions, disease and the continuous threat of raids from isolated pockets of Orks led to an environment of despair and hopelessness. Psykers consulted forbidden lore in an attempt to shield the survivors, biologists engineered vaccinations intended for immunity and the Ecclesairy maintained morale by glorifying martyrs and referring to their triumphant history.
After seven months of desperation and countless unspeakable measures to ensure survival, the defenders were offered the grotesque but life sustaining hand of Nurgle. Remanets of Battalions were spared, Ogryns were offered freedom from their pain in exchange for a perfected form and it was rumoured that even the dead may have a second chance. Yet, on the surface, Anthrax IV appeared uninhabitable and lifeless.
The remaining six planets mourned the loss of Anthrax IV and celebrated their noble sacrifice. The initial inquiry revealed no foul play and deemed that although undesirable, it was a necessary course of action that had to be taken in order ensure the survival of the weaker, agri-worlds and factory based planets.
The first signs of retribution could be traced back to the agri-world of Anthrax II. Crops wilted, food stocks were soiled, famine ensured and plague was rife. The controlling authorities increasingly struggled to maintain order as food reserves diminished.
Anthrax Prime ordered strict quarantine controls on Anthrax II and bail out measures were undertaken. Resources, specialists and troops were dedicated to quell the unrest and restore order. Patrolling ships were diverted from monitoring the barren Anthrax IV and prevented anyone from attempting an escape from the agri-world. Suddenly key appointments and commanders were struck down with an incurable fever, patrol ships stopped responding as their crew fell down one by one and elements of the infected population were able to muster an escape.
Each of the remaining planets began descending into chaos as ships were able dock and spread the disease. Once thriving factories and hives turned into ghost cities and military units became combat ineffective as their ranks were rapidly depleted. Of the infected planets only Anthrax Prime was able to establish a green zone around their main continent.
As this anarchy unravelled only one planet was able to stand strong, untainted by the mysterious illness, Anthrax III. Though the population was reassured that all was well and that the planetary defences were standing strong, the truth was that there had been no threat presented to them. The Governor and his ruling council of advisors were perplexed as to why they had not seen cases of the disease, why they had not suffered, why they had been spared whilst others had fallen? Then, on the eve of Anthrax Prime’s valiant but doomed last stand a blinding flare of psychic energy manifested on Anthrax IV.
The planet that had been written off as Terra Nullis was suddenly a hub of activity. Its defenders had emerged professing their loyalty to Nurgle and asking if their sacrifice had been sufficient enough for his blessing. With six planets struck down in as many years, one but still stood left to deny them the completion of this unholy ritual. Anthrax III must fall.
As Nurgle granted his first blessings by gifting the survivors of Anthrax IV with his own markings, the undead crews of countless Imperial Navy Patrols began to reanimate and were eerily guided towards Anthrax III.
Scrambled messages requesting immediate help were dispatched and were quickly actioned once unusual psychic activity was detected in the area. Members of the Ordo Sepulturum convened to respond to this dire situation and pulled together every expert they could. This conclave acted with great conviction and rapidly set about requisitioning Imperial forces, identifying potential outcomes and assigning specific duties.
At the centre of this seconded force was the men and women of __(planet name TBC)_____. Seasoned by years of urban warfare and accustomed to laying low the heretic, they were an ideal force to provide the bulk of the manpower required. Under the command of ___(Name and Rank TBC)_______, the 9th Army Group commenced their battle prep en route to their new theatre of war.
With a mighty fleet of potent ability inbound, the battle of Anthrax III had begun…
^Firstly, congratulations for making it this far. So that collection of incorrect terminology essentially forms the background for the supplement.
A few points to note on the fluff:
-Because this would be a group collaboration nothing is set in stone.
-I’d love to flesh out some more prominent characters, both good and evil.
-Including a few extracts/brief stories dotted within the supplement that emphasises individual accounts/key moments in the storyline would help add detail. i.e. a one or two hundred word story depicting Anthrax III’s council of betrayal, a tale of desperation for the survivors of Anthrax IV living underground, a short story on the Ordo Sepulturum’s initial meeting which identifies key characters, a story which includes a platoon or company commander attending a brief/orders, etc. etc.
-Because the supplement focuses on the requisitioned IG force that is assisting the Ordo Sepulturm, they obviously need a bit more love in the story. Things like: who are they, where did they come from, what’s their background, what equipment do they use, what’s their order of battle/organisation, how many of them are there…
-A timeline of events would be really helpful/cool as seen in so many real codexs
Once again, if fluff isn't your thing you don't need to be put off-we'll still need rule testers, painters and artists.
If any of this interests you once again please get in touch and hopefully we can make this work!
Cheers!
Damian
