Well, you have:
- the Astra Militarum (imperial guard) codex - the Militarum tempestus (stormtroopers) codex which - the Armoured Company (in Forgeworld's Imperial Armour 1- 2nd edition)
All of these could be a primary or allied detachment. In addition you get to add: an Inquisitorial detachment (from codex inquisition), a fortification detachment, and use allied Knight/Space Marines of all varieties/Sisters of Battle.
All of these can be good, but it depends on how they supplement your army. Adding a librarian/inquisitor with divination to buff your shooting can be a nice addition to most armies. Adding extra cover/guns from fortifications can be great for static armies. You could even add some crazy stuff like an "invisible, teleporting, intercepting, daemon-summoning, grav-centurion deathstar of doom" if that's your thing. All in all, how 'good' a detachment is depends on what they add to your main army.
If you are talking about formations: there are a bunch of them in the new Mont'ka book. I won't post any link because I'm not sure it is allowed, but a quick search on "Imperial guard mont'ka formations" should take you to one of the sites/blogs where you can check the leaked images to see if investing in the book is worth it.

If you mean Formations, rather than detachments, then they are in the Tau VS Guard Campaign supplement 2 book deal, called Mont'kka.
The Emperor's Shield Infantry company is the infantry heavy list core choice and it's a minimum of 170 models bare bones just for the single core choice without any auxiliaries, which seems like a kind of steep tax. You can still just put heavy weapons in those 15 infantry squads but it might as well be apocalypse every day with the new formation system.

Does anyone know if mont'ka is appocolipse or can you use the formations in normal 40k?

Update to this thread the new detachment in monkai is great. I used it in a 1500 point tournament and having over 150 guardsmen that reroll ones with las guns and all the other special rules was awesome. Almost every turn I shot over 300 shots and got 4th place but it was close matches and almost made 2-3rd

What I took was
1 battle group command -CCS -chimera -commander w/bolter powerfist -medic -plasma gun -standard -krak grenades for vets
1 emperors shield company
-CCS -chimera -3 plasma gun -krak grenades for vets 1st emperor's shiled platoon -x3 armoured sentinels -3 autocannon
-x4 IS -4 autocannons
-x1 IS -1 autocannn -1 flamer -PCS -3 flamer
2nd emperor's shield platoon
-1 scout sentinel
-1 IS -1 autocannon
-4 IS no upgrades
-PCS no upgrades
3rd emperors shield platoon
-1 scout sentinel
-5 IS no upgrades
-PCS no upgrades
That was the list I took. came 1500 points exactly and beat necrons and demonkin. But suffered a very close lose against the winner of the tourney who was playing tau. I received 4th in the tourney but everyone was talking about the guard horde and how effective the formation was even at such a small point total

That is a whole load of bodies on the board and with the numerous benifits you get for running it I could see it working quite well. But there is no where near enough heavy daka in there for my liking and I hate to see that many footsloggers with out some commissars in there. Would be a formidable force though if it had objective secured just for the fact you could flood all the objectives with that many troops.

Lol didn't need objective secured because when we took an objective I just bubble wrapped then with bodies and heavy weapons would of been more useful I mean I had a bit but at such low points and so many bodies just wasn't necessary I never lost more then half my bodies and lasguns took down a storm surge turn one when he moved it up on his turn basically with the rules from the formations and his much better las guns become with rerolling ones to shoot and the special way of issuing those orders what ever you shoot at is dead that turn

The guard cadian to be exact have got a new codex supplement on black library with 12 new formations does any one know if these are the mont'ka formations or something different again. I'm assuming that because it is cadian that it will be the mont'ka ones, would save me buying the whole book.

I'm assuming that because it is cadian that it will be the mont'ka ones, would save me buying the whole book. They are probably the same. There are 14 cadian formations in the mont'ka book. But that is counting the codex AM infantry platoons & tempestus scions platoons that are noted as formation choices without any special rules.

per the Black Library:
• Datasheets for 8 super-heavy tanks to add to any Astra Militarum army • 12 Astra Militarum formations, groups of models that gain additional special rules when used together on the battlefield • Tactical Objectives for Astra Militarum forces to use in Maelstrom of War missions • A new Cadian Battle Group detachment representing the armies of Cadia • Cadia-specific Warlord Traits and Heirlooms • An Echoes of War mission based on a famous engagement of the Cadians
This is not a standalone product. It requires copies of Warhammer 40,000: The Rules and Codex: Astra Militarum to use. The content within this book is taken from 'The Red Waaagh!', 'Mont'ka' and 'Echoes of War: Last Step Backwards'.
