You probably guessed by the title but ive just gone and pre-ordered one of these beauties (+ a couple of the mechanicum limited box sets through my favourite discount 40,000 store) www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Mechanicum-Ordinatus-UlatorCan't wait to get my hands on this model! Wlast I wait for it to arrive I want to ask what you guys think about mechanicum paint schemes? Should they always be primarily red for any reason (red for mars etc) or do mechanicum have a wide range of schemes? I don't have the codex etc to refer to but would like to keep them lore friendly as they say.

See, now that is a model I like.
Red is usually the primary color, yes, but if you're going to put that much money on a model, you can paint it whatever the heck you want.

Mars is red on the outside, cream on the inside of robes, dark metal underneath the robes. Metalica is almost the reverse of Mars, white, red and dark metal underneath Ryza is orange on the outside, red on the inside. Here's a codex image found searching the net: random skitarii book image There are some more in the book, I'll have a detailed look later.

interesting but there are many forge worlds so a custom scheme may be ok. You see I had a couple of early forge world mech models, phalax is it and went with a greyish blue (thunderhawk blue I think) scheme for those. thought it worked realy well. if I go with codex colours ill try my and at metallica, always wanted a white army.

ah you see ive not bought any new toys for nearly 12 months, last time I got anything was when I had my thunderhawk replaced at the start of the year. Got two ultramarine assault rams to finish painting from that spending spree so ive been saving my spare cash for something like this. If I had not just bought a house I was tempted to go for a warlord but this will do for now ;D

Did the plastic mark 4 armour not tempt you, considering all your marines?

different marine armours are not my thing, I like them but not on my list, im a big centrepiece model type of guy lol although I have so many big models now ill need an imperator titan as a centre piece when they finally make one lol Then I will remortgage my house lol

Did you already get the Fellblade for your marines?

No I didn't really think it fits, I still think it's a baneblade which I know it technically sort of is. Nearly got the big melta version, forget the name but didn't think it would work when I later out my army on disp!ay, strange I know but I like symmetry lol

It's a Volkite cannon, I think. Yeah they both look great.
Anyway the missing official forge worlds are:
Lucius: black vehicles with gold trim on any baroque patterns on the edge and a red stripe on the front with stylised 'L'
Agripinaa: black, gold trim but cream on the bottom (it shows a Dunecrawler with legs painted cream)
Stygies VII; red, black underneath, gold trim
Graia: same as Agripinaa but with a cream stripe on the front where the forge symbol goes
Making your own forge world is quite rewarding. Seeing as I set my armies in the 39th millennium my forge world is Alhex Zandringham; known as the Jewel of Ultima segmentum until it fell to marauding bands of Orks in the latter 39th millennium, after a 500 year streak of bad luck, starting when they supplied faulty ammunition to an Imperial guard battle group, which later caused other guard regiments stationed on the world to rebel and smash everything in a neo Luddite revolution. This weakened the local Imperial defences, even drew marines away from fighting the Orks, which led to the orks advancing and ultimately destroying the doomed forge world in a frenzy of tech looting.

im probably going to create my own forge world tbh as above, also in the ultimar segmentum to fit with my other armies. Don't fancy a balck and gold mechanicum theme as I still have 4000 points of black legion to paint those colours lol

ok just about to start building this one at the weekend! been a bit distracted building models that have been sat in forge world bags for months, Caestus assault ram number 2 and just a small Storm Hammer super heavy. will build the ulator ordinatus before I finish my forge world stomper though. still in the middle of building my games/hobby room were I will set up all my miniatures related stuff. working on a temp table at the minute. More soon....

p.s the storm hammer for some reason was a right sod getting things strait, the resin was fine it was the plastic bits that seemed a bit off, ill give it an 8/10 for difficulty. lots of glue on my hands right now lol

Ok so as promised I got this one build and ready for undercoating! As usual being forge world a lot of cutting and trimming! no warpage on this model though which was very good!
First off as mentioned in a previous post I was building a small tank first which ill show you first instead of giving it its own thread, soon ill make a single thread for all my models as they are done.
First up is the Storm Hammer! this has been sat in its forge world bag since shortly after release so it defo needed building!
Went for flamer sponsons (magnatised) as it seemed like a good option for taking out infantry in close quarters battles, other options were laz cannons, multilasers and heavy bolters.
Still needs a bit of green stuff tlc before undercoating but its getting there!
Anyway for the main event........
Mechanicus Ulator
Tracks first of all! each main track section has an insert that connects to the hull and has the in track motors and details so for now these wont be glued in until painted, they sit in nice and snug without glue for now.
Just a little size comparison to start off with. The rear tracks are near land raider in size and the front rhino in size.
next up was trimming and cleaning all the larger components in bag one....
rear track section....
Another big bag of bits.......
this would have made a great piece of junk pile scenery!
sponsons assembled on front track section.
next the targeting signs. interesting this one, again the cog mechanism for it was such a good fit there is not need to glue the larger cog to the hull mount so now I can change the angle of the sights at will, many other reviews of the ulator have criticised the shims being on the lenses and I have to agree but it doesn't take much to get them looking round again.
Started assembling the main gun next...
yep its a big gun....
these two bits would make great epic 40 k terrain! (but very expensive waste of the rest lol)
Next I had to attach the gun to the hull but found during dry fitting that I only needed to glue the pistons to the gun and not the hull, the whole main gun fits snuggly on the hull and is also removable which is a godsend for transporting this thing about!
defo not compatible with baneblade pattern hull
just some size comparisons of various pieces...
Next up was connecting the two track sections which I worked a plan on, didn't fancy fixing these two together so ive employed the use of magnets, when the painting is finished ill glue the rotating joint together but ive hidden a couple of strong magnets further forward as seem below. again magnatising makes transport a lot easier! I expect the mechanicum do something similar when packing these things up after a campaign!
These two are the capable crew of this behemoth
All the individual parts ready for priming!
Completed.....
Well there we have it, all ready for undercoat and painting. I need to build some of my mechanicum guys and decide on exact paint scheme before I start painting this one so it could be some time before I crack on with painting. in fact probably wont be doing much painting until ive finished my hobby room. which should be a couple of weeks as im waiting for my carpet fitter + need to build all my shelving etc...
Any questions or comment please feel free to leave below....
Thanks.
