Hi I have been playing 40k for a while and my normal armies are ork, tau and Sm. I have a imperial guard army but never used until recently. When I was putting it together it was using a older codex. Now my son is playing 40k with Da and CSM we have used the imp guard, I even put together the bane blade that has sat in its box! To be honest it has been real fun using the army they struggle against Sm but the amount of fire your gun line can punch out is amazing! We had a 3000 point imp guard v chaos space marine , game the balisks and mortars wrecked the chaos marine and cultists force and the las guns mowed the rest down.
My my force consists of leman russ x1 battle cannon h bolters x3 leman russ twin auto cannon h bolters x3 vanq with lascannon balisk x2 2 platoons with a total of 10 squads, normal make is grenade launcher and vox, and apart from adding a plasma pistol etc to sight nothing else normally. special weapon squad x 2 snipers heavy weapon , bolters x 2 missile launchers x6 mortars x4 lascannonbalisk x3 armd sents x2 chimira baneblade standard issue. vendetta Couple of commissars , couple of engineers and company hq rounds it off.
In my old codex I could fire balisks direct fire paying a upgrade but I can't do this now, so how do I get around the minimal range problem? I love the models and am thinking of getting another one.

Unless you're using the lemans as hqs as well you might be running too many heavy support slots (unless they're in squadrons or you have a double CAD army or are going Unbound).
I think unless you tailor that CSM force to be able to take out tanks - i.e. every squad must have either a powerfist, or a meltagun or a lascannon (even Havoc squads with multiples) - they'll really struggle against AV14 on the Lemans. If you make the change, hopefully, you'll notice the CSM holding up slightly better, pehaps even challenging the guard on occasion, and its all about finding that balance to have a more fun game.
