Evening Ladies and gents. Im new to this whole forum project log thing, but i figured that being at uni, and doing very little else other than study and work, i should have a wee something to keep myself busy. My first ever army some 11 years ago was an A stra Militarum imperial guard cadain 8th army. It went through some various stages and a number of house moves, so it is in ruinous state, since then ive collected, chaos, space wolves and tau (i know shameful, space commies and filthy heretics *Spit-spit-stamp-stamp*). so with all that in mind, i've decided to go back to my auld roots, and have started a guard army, but with a bit of a twist; Old dogs new tricks. ive picked the second edition Cadian shock troops to be the regular bods, and various other 'vintage' GW guard stuff. So. These blokes arrived yesterday in the post. The boss man (Col Shaffer Model) will be converted (war gear and head swap maybe) The models that i will convert into a Colour Sargent and lieutenant (Yes internet Colour has a U) and Lastly the first Section of Bods. Now i just need a few bits, Slotted bases, and a paint scheam, thinking SADF Nutria Brown style, or Mixed Partizan M camo. More to come! Thanks for looking troops, Khan.

Welcome to the forum, Khan.
Those are classic Cadians; used to love those models before the plastic ones came out. It'll be hard to find those nowadays; do you have old stock or are you rabidly hunting eBay for them? Would be great if you could find those classic lascannon teams with the remote control holding firing model. Only if you do find them you'll have to rebase them to the new standard for heavy weapon teams (both models count as one model with 2 wounds, on a 60mm round base - so in the new rules it's easier for them both to die from anything S6 or over.)
Also here is your new Imperial Guard kit; a mangled torch that needs a new battery, a broken carrot and a sheet of cardboard.

Cheers, The models aren't to hard to find, or at least it has not been my experience, However that being said, they are perhaps on the more expensive side of Normal. I was aware that id have to re base the heavy weapon teams, however i couldn't remember the base size, thanks! I want to build a more balanced army for fun games that i can stand a fair chance of winning, I've no time for power gamer's or tournaments, to me that kills the fun / point of the game, and is not what i remember from the 'Old days' as it where. i feel this will be a long project to get enough bodies in order to have a good infantry base and enough variety to enable me to adjust lists ect, but i'm super excited about it.

Hello again troops, The force is progressing slowly, sadly i've not been very well and Uni has taken up a lot of my time, but the bases are here and on the fellows ( I wont post a photo of that, too boring but now comes the task of choosing a paint scheme, this army is going to be chalked full of references to games, Historical units / peoples and characters, and based on the Guard Story i'm writing in my own time, as such i feel that the camo scheme i'm drawn to most is a historical one (Cookie if you figure out who wore it). Small bit of Back ground. the Regiment is based on a feral guard unit raised for counter insurgency operations in there solar system, trained by more professional and advanced guard troops. they are known as the 1st Hagen rifles, the third and the second battalions are later formed together due to casualties from misuse and being re-roled into areas they where not trained for to form 3-2 battalion. i've taken references from Finland (YAY Suomi) Vikings, Germanic tribes, Celts, a Chechen custom, Native Americans and a small segment of culture from a group of people in south west Africa. the regiment are almost all albino in appearance (apart from some of the staff who trained them and now lead them), they are homogeneous, suspicious of outsiders and fiercely defensive of their traditions and customs. a fact of which many a commissar and ministorum staffer have learned the hard way, and have the head aches to prove it. (to represent this, the regiment came to a compromise with their training staff whom they have come to see as part of the tribe and fellow braves; they would wear their issued equipment, but would be allowed a fur tabard / loin cloth with their tribal emblem dyed onto it which they wear over their camouflage trousers) after all, blue trousers and bright tunics with furs is a good way to get yourself shot. The issue is i'm not sure how to paint it..... any help would be appreciated ive go the colours nailed and bought but sadly am not sure how best to go about painting it. the acceptable alternative, although preferably not the one i go with directly, is the cadain 8th jungle scheme. so please let me know what you think troops, any advice would be greatly appreciated and your thoughts on the two would be great too

I'd undercoat with the lightest colour, then 'mask' areas using blu-tac or a similar sqodgy, easily removable material (possibly even white tac ) I've been having fun this week with liquid masking agent, used in painting and available at a reasonable price from art stores. It stinks like hell as it contains ammonia, although it works fine on plastic and resin. Totally ganks brushes up though so use an old one. Anyway, if you use your chosen masking agent sparingly and cover increasing amounts with it (so your darkest bit [the daek brown] will be all that is visible on the last 'layer'). I'd also use a spray, such as one of the Army Painter ones, as they have good coverage without clagging up detail. You could probably do a squad on 20 mins if it was warm and dry outside (or in your well ventilated spray booth). Pick out the details (faces, metal, guns) afterwards. It'd probably be easiest doing 3 rather than 4 colours, as busy camo can get lost on itself easily on small models. I tried a four tone urban scheme a while back; it didn't look good.

Hey buddy,
gonna make this snappy as I'm using an on screen keyboard..
Welcome to the board mate,I hope you enjoy your time here. T'is a great little corner of the interwebs! It's awsome to see those old school metal cadians about, I wish you the best of luck sire.
Now... Camouflage patterns... They can be a ballache. As suggested by 3ff3ct, I'd try a 3 or maybe even a 2 colour pattern. Baring in mind, DPM is designed to break up the form of the human body, this is quite achievable with a very basic technique if done right, may I suggest taking a look on youtube?
Once again, welcome! And the best of luck!
Dave
