Hi guys, I've been getting back into 40k and I just started playing and I've been having issues with maelstrom objectives which is to be expected given our relatively limited mobility and durability, namely the low side and rear armour of vehicles. Most notably I lost to a friend's CSMs who I had previously never came close to losing against in 5th edition. We rolled mission 2 and he got first turn. He had rolled the master of deception warlord trait and got a 3 allowing him to infiltrate 3 of his squads and their rhinos 18" away from my lines. He proceeded to move 6" and disembarke placing him around 5" from my lines closely followed by melta bikes and a mauler fiend. This let him flame havocs and lord with burning brand wipe out the large majority of the blob. While I did suffer heavy casualties I managed to secure my lines in turn 4 but the game ended after 5 and I was behind 3VP. I did have some poor luck including my Vendettas showing up turn 3 and 4 and likely some slightly sub-optimal deployment choices but I was largely rendered unable to push out of my deployment zone due to having the majority of his army in my face turn 1 and given that mission 2 requires you to hold objectives to generate more tactical objectives I was fighting an uphill battle. I can only imagine this would be ten times worse if he was a more experienced player and running a more optimized list from a more current codex. Here is the list I ran:
CAD
HQ
Pask
Leman Russ punisher
Multi melta sponsons
Las cannon
Stubber
Dozer blade
Leman Russ executioner
Plasma cannon sponsons
Las cannon
Dozer blade
Troops
2 Veteran squad
3 melta guns
Chimera
Hull heavy flamer
Dozer blade
Infantry platoon
Platoon command squad
3 flamers
Heavy flamer
3 infantry squads
Las cannons
Special weapon squad
3 flamers
Fast attack
Vendetta
Vendetta
Heavy support
wyvern
Hull heavy flamer
Wyvern
Hull heavy flamer
Wyvern
Hull heavy flamer
CADIAN BATTLE GROUP
Battle group command
Company command squad
2 plasma guns
Las cannon
Astropath
Chimera
INQUISITORIAL DETACHMENT
HQ
Inquisitor coteaz
1850pts
And here is what I was thinking about running at 2k points to better equipt my list to face fast armies in maelstrom
CAD
HQ
Commissar yarrick
Ministorum priest
Auto gun
Troops
2 Veteran squad
3 melta guns
Chimera
Hull heavy flamer
Dozer blade
Infantry platoon
Platoon command squad
3 flamers
Heavy flamer
4 infantry squads
melta gun
Power axe
Melta bombs
Special weapon squad
3 flamers
Fast attack
Vendetta
Vendetta
Heavy support
3 Wyvern
Hull heavy flamer
INQUISITORIAL DETACHMENT
HQ
Inquisitor coteaz
Ordo xenos inquisitor
Mastery level 1
Force sword
Rad grenades
3 servo skulls
Oathsworn detachment
Knight warden
So I started by replacing pask's squad with a knight warden because while Pask dishes out pretty hefty fire power he doesn't contribute any board presence as almost any unit can wreck him in assault and watching a 150pt unit of bikers slip through your lines and kill 450pts of tanks including your warlord is a little disheartening. While the Knight can move 12" a turn and present a very real assault threat allowing it to claim maelstrom objectives. I'll definitely include him in larger games but I think the Knight is the priority. Using the spare points I picked up a xenos inquisitor to take servo skulls to prevent getting boxed in by scouts or infiltrators and providing Rad grenades for the blob. I also switched my CCS for yarrick to join the power blob which combined with the priest and both inquisitors will provide a good amount of board control and can grind down most opponents. My concern however is the loss of the Las cannons which leaves me a little lacking in ranged at although I think it might be worth it to have the ability to get a stronger foothold in the midfield. Sorry for the text wall guys, I'm looking forward to your opinions on this.
