Right, Basically, You need a Codex.
Then, You have the command Structer.
HQ Squads assigned to hQ - Heavy Weapons / 3 Sentinals.
Platoons: Platoons HQ 5 Squads of 10 Men or Armoured Fist You can have 5 Platoons. I belive Armoured Fist take up one Platoon in a Basic Guard Army.
Fast Attack: Sentinals Hellhounds Rought Riders
Heavy Support Heavy Weapons Platoons, Which are 9 Heavy Weapon Bases, and a Platoon HQ, I belive. Leman Russ Varients Basalisk
Now, as you are just starting out I suggest a basic Army
One HQ Command One Platoon Command 3 Squads
Thats like roughtly 500 Points I think, I dont have my Codex handy.
Maybe after that, bulk it out With Fast attack, Heavy Support and such as.

Good. Good.
Your best bet is to keep away from the Armour till you have a decent sized army, keep it all troops, and when you have about 700 Points of Troops, get some Tanks.

The basis of an IG army doesn't give u much choice anyway tbh, so you will need....... 1 command squad. basically 5 guys. Then you have the choice of either 2 platoons consisting of a 5 man command squad and at least 2 squads of 10 guys. OR 1 platoon (25 guys) and an armoured fist squad. (10 men and a chimera). OR 1 platoon (25 guys) and a conscript platoon (20-50 guys). With any of these options you are going to need lots of men, over 50 in most cases. So as a start, decide what u want ur guards to do. I started off with the 2 platoons idea, alpha and beta platoons, with 2 squads each. This gave me the basis of a legal army (1 HQ and 2 troops), and I can sub one of them for conscripts if I feel like it (starting to really like conscripts now). So make a start making and painting ur 1st platoon . 2 squads of 10 guys. Just remember that u don't have to give sargs las pistols, they can have lasguns, and u may want special weapons.

On the lighter side of collecting guard....make sure you have a LOT of paints. lol
I found that if you write up a list of what you want for an army, than you go out and buy what you want. The only thing i suggest with that way is to check out what come in a box of troops for example so you can save a little money if possible.

- Click on your profile name. Then click modify profile.
The more you post the higher your rank. But don't use that as an excuse to spam.

Goddess is right about taking stock in what you have in the IG boxes you get.The cadian troop box comes with 20 men.if you are using heavy weapons you will only need 16 of them( the other 4 are the heavy weapons crews). These guys you can use for either your Command squad or your platoon command , with the officers. You also get alot of extra parts with them, so you can make like extra flamers or extra grenade launchers for the command squads. It's the same with the heavy weapons box.You can make 3 full heavy weapons teams or 6 of them if you use 3 of the extra guys from the basic cadian troops box. Also lay out the paint scheme you want before hand,or get an idea of what you want.I make up 2-3 in different paint schemes before i finally decide. Starting with IG is expencive but it's not too bad if you know a few tricks.cheers and good luck =)

I'm glad that Col. Hengiest explained that a bit better than i did but i would like to add to it....
If the cadians come in a box of 20 than you dont want 22 in your list cause than you'll have to go and buy another box for 2 modelsto me it seems like a waste of money when you are first starting out.

heres one....after ure basic 2 platoon...2 squad each approach fatuous had suggested...start buying cadian heavy weapon teams...for the purpose of adding heavy firepower to ure squads, then start diversifying...and getting what you feel suits you and ure army's feel.

With the basic cadian boxes of inf and HWs you can pretty much make everything u are going to need for ur starter army. A couple of junior officers are good too, but if you have tanks, the officer head with the hat looks cool on infantry too. I'm not a big fan of the metal HQ squad, it's ok, but I saved the cash and have built my own HSO, master vox, banner bearer, etc.....
A good tip with the HW squads. The missile launchers fit on a shoulder with out a stand, and they look like german panzerfausts. Plus u can model up some cool heavy bolter teams lying down with the HW and inf boxes, so u should be able to get 3 squads of HWs out of 1 box if u have enough bodies (think some one already mentioned that).

Yeha, as fatuous is saying, you can get a lot of Heavy weapons out of a Box of Heavy Weapons.
You can model say, for example, a squad of Motars from the box. then you can model as swuad of missile launchers using body and legs from normal infanty, thats the best thing of guard, the divesity of the models.

Plus u can use any spare auto cannons or las cannons to make exterminator and annihilator tank turrets should u want them .

That HW box is really awesome. There are so many things you can do with it, i'm currently thinking about making some A.C.'s sitting on a drop pod or something like that like it was just pulled out and they started shooting. I didn't know that the M.L. would fit on an arm but i'm going to look into that as soon as i'm done here. Thanks for that tip.

The missile launchers have a small peg and the correct shoulder pad has a small indent to hld the launcher in place. Then u just need to decide if u want the front guards on or not . If you have any spare HW crouching legs, then they look cool, but they look great standing too. I used a mix, 2 standing, 1 crouching for a bit of variety.

i bought some kneeling legs from Ebay some time ago just to make the troops look different.I'm pretty sure you can still get them there.Think i'll get some more to use up the HW stuff.

The kneeling legs look good on some Guard models aswell, say you want a set specifically for guarding an small area, the kneeling legs good good if you have 5 kneeling and then 5 standing behind them.
