i don't know about you guys but i like to be able to assemble the stuff myself.I have gotten stuff off Ebay and there was huge glue spots on them and things like that. It's kind of annoying becouse you haveot take them apart and scrape it all off, or it's painted in a way you don't like... I guess if you are just starting out it's no big deal becouse " LOOK AT THE DEAL I GOT" lol, or they are in the colors you want any way and the paint is good.

I meant buy new stuff of ebay.
You can get the Cadian battle force box set for under £45 (incl postage) off ebay or £50 from GW. You make a huge saving by buying the box set to begin with but an extra £5 knocked off and it gets delivered to your door.

This is what you get in the battleforce box set (with normal prices in brackets)-
20 Cadian Shock Troops (£18) , 3 Cadian Heavy Weapon teams (£20), 1 Imperial Guard Leman Russ Battle Tank (£25) and a set of Gothic Ruins (£7).
To buy this lot individually would cost you £70 or you could get it delivered to your door for £45 and spend the money you save on a HQ.

no ones mentioned it, and even though it's posted in a multitude of other threads around the forum, I figured I'd mention it here for those who don't want to go digging thru the forums to research army types. in addition to the options listed (1hq & 2 regular platoons, 1hq/1 platoon/1 armored fist, 1hq/1platoon/1 conscript platoon) there's also the doctrine grenadiers that allows you to take 3 troops worth of stormtroopers (or kasrkin as us cadians call 'em). I think a box of 10 kasrkin is about the same as a box of 20 regular guardsmen, but kasrkin are elite guard soldiers. they have improved weapons, grenades, a better stat-line (giving them a space marine-like feel when you're shooting) and most importantly (in my opinion) improved armor (making them able to withstand enemy rifle fire). the models look great, and the unit is a solid choice in your army. this doctrine allows you to take a 95% kasrkin army if you want (your command hq can all be given carapace armor and grenades from the armory but won't be true kasrkin - other than that you can take 3 troops and 3 elites worth of these elite soldiers, though it'll cost you another doctrine to unlock the elite choices from the restricted unit list in the doctrine section).
when I started with guard I focused solely on infantry, I bought and painted nothing but infantry - I didn't even buy a vehicle for a long time. eventually I had 2x 25 man platoons, a command squad and a sentinel. after all that was painted, I began to look around at vehicles. I found, however, that in working on my infantry, I wanted something more aggressive than standard infantry. the achilles heel of standard guard infantry is that unless your men are in cover, they will 90% of the time get NO armor save at all. this is really discouraging when you pull a squad off the battlefield in literal fistfuls. stormtrooper/kasrkin units are capable of taking rifle fire and so are capable of manoeuvering offensively - give them a chimera and they can make an initial surge and dismount and rapid fire into an advancing enemy as well.
so I ended up getting more infantry, and now I have a healthy amount of kasrkin AND regular infantry. you'd be suprised how many points you can sink into infantry. If I get everything I want infantry-wise, I'm easily able to crack 2,000pts, and that's before considering armor even! this is why I mention the kasrkin option - if you want armor and an offensive infantry force then you might consider the grenadiers doctrine and filling your troops with kasrkins taken as troop choices and just cut out the 'standard guard infantry' completely. this'll save you enough points to add in your armor and you will come out with a good looking balanced offensive guard army with a 'task force' kind of feel.
good luck!

I am starting a new army myself thats a grenadier army.It has worked pretty well in the games i have played with it, about 850 pts.the docs i use for it are
grenadiers carapace armour sharp shooters independant commissars special weapon squads
the feel of the army is pretty good, they all have carapace armour, the commissars can go with the squads, my special weapons teams and support teams can have sharp shooters which helps out alot for me.
I also give the grenadiers and the command squad chimeras to make them more mobile.I have a hellhound in my 850 list also and i'm thinking about making this army mechanised,if so i would have to drop something like the special weapon squads.
So grenadiers is a great option if you wanting to shave points abit, they look great and you are right they do have that 'task force' feel to them.

yeah, I find myself a bit envious what with having 3 platoons of flak jacketed infantry painted but whatever, I've got a couple full squads of grenadiers - if my envy gets me then I'll just go paint kasrkin

i know exactly how you feel Turtleboy.painting metal minis for years, buying up all the blisters of 2 that i could find trying to get full platoons then they come up with the grenadier doc... I actually repainted some of my old stormies for the command squad to give them a different feel, like they are more elite then their normal troops.then FRP games has those great urban war minis that look like the old stormies so i'm getting some of them for the missile launcher squads and stuff.
maybe this is a little off topic, i appologise.
