So we did a for fun start collecting box tournament today. Rules were simple; buy a start collecting box and thats your army. Anything you can build, make, formationize, equip etc out of the box was all kosher. I did the Tempestus Scion box and used the formation inside to build my force. It was as such...
Lord Commissar
-carapace armor
-power sword
-plasma pistol
TCS
-Powerfist and plasma pistol on prime
-medic
-vox
-two plasma guns
MTS
-power sword and plasma pistol on tempestor
-vox
-two volley guns
Taurox Prime
-battle cannon and autocannons
-literally every upgrade because screw it its free
Formation: allows the MTS to enter ongoing reserve if destroyed as long as the commissar is alive. comes in from deep strike. No roll required.
1st Game: Against a new genestealer cult player. Objective was relic plus secondary. I wont bother with details since he was a newer player and thus it was more of a rule class than a game. I tabled him (it was a tournament after all) though was very nice about it, and talked him through every step
2nd Game: Eldar get started box opponent. Objective was kill points. Damn this thing is strong. The army is a wave serpant, 3 scat bikes and a bike farseer. The ability to move, shoot, move a little, and than move again is insane. 24+D6 inches every turn. Jesus. I ended up tabling him too but only by pure luck. A single scion charged with krak grenades two turning in a row into the wave serpant to cause it die (it was down one from a lucky rending shot from the same squad...one of the orders they can be given in that codex). I got lucky and he over extended his bikes to try and get line of sight and wasnt able to flee far enough after and I shreded them with all that AP3 hot shot goodness.
3rd Game/Final: Chaos get started running them as death guard. Objective was 3 objectives (1 in middles worth 3, 1 in your deployment worth 1 for you, and one in his worth 2) plus secondary This one shouldnt have gone my way. Unfortunatly for him, he couldnt make a save and his hellbrute with autocannon died turn 2 to three super lucky shot followed by terrible saving throws. He deep striked his commander near my taurox that was hiding my commissar/warlord/formation-holder-together but scattered 11 inches away. It being a fast vehicle he then couldnt catch it an never tried. I was able to force enough saves to get through his 2+5++ 4+fnp (rolled a better one). From there, he just hid, hoping to run out last turn to take the middle objective. Combat ensued with me having 1st blood, slay the warlord, my own objective, and holding the middle with the remneants of both squads. He charged the the two guys each from both of his squads, failed with one and making with the other. It was a disordered charge (he needed to get both squads to run/die to take it) so he only had 4 attacks. He missed two and failed to wound on either...as did I.
So over all a fun tourny and my first tournament win ever! Would definitly recommend trying these silly ones out every once in a while.
