For a game of about 1000 points-2000 points. How big should the table be? should you be able to shoot your enemy from the begining?should it be a long slog?
What size makes for the best 1 v 1 game. I say a game in a shop today and they were pretty much only 24' away.

I play on a 6' x 4' table for games up to 1000 pts. Usually there's over 24" between deployment zones.

that sounds about right. 8 by 4s are good for 2k games, especially with IG. 1k pointers on a 4 by 4 can be fun, but are usually quick blood baths rather than being overly serious tactically .

I roll on a 6'x4' pretty much always. the only time I really enjoy a 4'x4' is for combat patrols and scraps up to maybe 750pts. anything higher and you introduce the strategy/tactics side of 40k which benefits from room to manoeuver.
you can always do scenario kind of battles, where your 'sector' along the 'battlefront' is a 4' table frontage. the enemy is attacking along a narrow corridor and has other units attacking to each flank which are being defended by your friendly ally units in neighboring sectors. a 4'x4' can be used to simulate a dense imperial front really well and it introduces a new slant on tactics and strategy that is more based on ability to kill efficiently vs. manoevuring and positioning.
each way could be fun and challenging in its own right.

I have played 4 player games on a 6 by 4, 1000 points each, 2 man teams.
4 player, combat patrol style death match games on a 4 by 4 can be a good laugh too.

Yeah they are good fun, not too long, and generally brutal affairs . As I don't get much time to play much it's a good way of playing against my mates and catch up at the same time.

the 2 on 2 on combat patrols are great fun, i have to agree. We do that one some times also if there is alot of people wanting to play and not enough room.
