reading in my 2nd edition IG codex, it mentions that there are no more squat stronghold planets in the imperium and that the last of them seceded during the age of apostasy.
before that it mentions the inquisition testing the humans of planets rediscovered during the time where mankind re-explored the stars for DNA proof that they were in fact 'fully human;' if the people of the rediscovered planet didn't measure up, the whole planet was exterminated and repopulated - this could be a reason for the squats secession from the imperium - the fact that the inquisition was probably slaughtering them wholesale on sight for not being fully human.
and that, my friends, is my thought on the age old question "what ever happened to the squats?"

hehe think space dwarf. they were axed back in 2nd edition - slated to get their own codex but dissapeared without a trace. if GW had a bermuda triangle, then squats would definately have been lost to it

i really loved the little devils wizzing around on war trikes and xo armour making the boss es tough as f***, i wasn't playing when they axed the squats, from what i can gather it was a GW decision as they did not want a complete race transaction from WHFB to 40k, this i think this sucks as they then brought out necrons which are skeletons in space, and tau which are cold ones in space, if any GW senior staff visit this thread "i want squats back" & on another note the squat race was big enough and tough enough to have given the inquistion a good pounding

Damn right, i agree with sammy. Even though i havent seen them played, i've seen some 40k models, and the epic, and these guys were tough walnuts. Especially their termies...DAMN. they were like a full metal dwarf, only scarier with big guns. Gud explanation for why they went though turtleboy.

sad thing is though that later in the codex, in the allies section, right under the 'you can take eldar allies' was the 'you can take squats as allies' bit. it said 'though the codex isn't out yet, we plan on releasing it for 2nd edition. oh well to that eh? ah second edition - I'd love to take a few falcon grav tanks for allies dude!!!

Squats got axed simply because not enough people were buying them. GW get are touchy about it because everyone moans that they've gone but no-one bought them when they were avaliable.

heh I'd laugh, GW yanks em cuz sales are down, causing a riot, then waits a decade to see if the griping is sustained, then re-releases them and pow they're the mega-sensation flavor of the month 'a decade in the making!!!' I'd definately laugh, then buy some. with the current style, man squats would be so awesome!

I agree.. though I have always been on the band wagon to buy/collect squats since 2nd edition.. mostly cause they looked cool when I first started ( some 12 yrs ago ) and were smaller so easier and faster to paint There are the few rare unofficial codexs roaming the net just like Chaos Dwarves for Fantasy.. and there has been a few pics of recently painted up armies of them as well.. on TWF forums.. but nothing huge or substantial.. still think they should bring them back though

Actually, the offical background is that the few Squat worlds were overrun by Tyranids. And the out-of-universe explination is that they were eliminated to further diversify Warhammer 40,000 from Warhammer Fantasy. Essentially, they got tired of Space Dwarves, Space Elves, Space Orks, and Space Bretonians going at it.
That said, the Tau Fleetlist for Battlefleet Gothic includes an allied race called the "Demiurg", a species of squat, bearded humanoids known for their insular clanish society and incredible manufacturing and craftsmanship abilities. The Demiurg homeworld was, coincidentally, destroyed, so they live aboard their ships...

that would work you could have them back as a sort of battle star galactica style fleet bringing the last of the squats back and also i think the reason no one bought them back in the day, was they were relativly expensive when a terminator cost approx £2 no kid could afford the same for exo armour squat half the size and the trikes were pricey as well, only the plastic rank and file cost the same as IG, and also they were never given a direction like the other races, they always were the imperiums short side kicks or mercenary, it would be cool to bring them back as some sort of anti-inquetion revenge type thing. but on another note as to why gw should re releasse them as said before loads of people would buy them out of nostalgia and loads of new players would leap on the new space dwarfs army thing, specialy if they were a sort of half way house anti-inquistion revenge for the betrayel of there worlds etc ,

just read this forum. I think that squats shouldn't be brought back i would hate the idea of warhammer 40k being the fanstasy with guns scenrio. Also if any one is intrested our galsxy is acutualy quite close to another and is ripping that one apart. Maybe thats where all the axed races go?

the thing is twerd you cannot deny the simerlarities getting rid of squats to try and break out of the fact that 40k & WHFB are the same races but with guns and in space is stupid all players of both systems and lets be honest most people play both systems are aware of the similarities in fact lots of players use the same races for each game system, but then bringing in necrons and tau to 40K who are copies of WHFB races but not bringing back squats just isnt enough justification to axe a race that has lots of potential, and with the proposed apocolypse game system the more 40k races the better i say, especiely if one of them had a proper axe to grind with just about everyone.

I think it all about where to put their (GW) attention and where the demand is. I know there is a lot for demand for squats, but would there be enough to make it financially viable I don't know.
I used to have squats and think that there is a space for them in 40K. I'd love to get a squat biker army. With the new moulding techniques they'd look awesome.
In many ways they are over lapping with other races, which could be a contributing factor as to why they were axed too. You can already have IG or speed freaks, so perhaps their stat line was too orky.
Squats really worked well in Epic, where things like the land train, the collosus, etc. really set them apart from other races, but I don'tthink u could get that sort of hardware in to 40K very well, so they'd end up in Rhinos or something.

ooh, i have a couple of squads of squats, and a squad biker or two somewhere...hmmm *rumages* took them down to gw a few years back, they allowed me to play them alongside my old space marine force, just for novalty value, but gave them the same rules as ig conscripts. suffice to say they didnt last very long! You can pick them up all over ebay, but its almost not worth it, cause the're dead expensive, and if you'd probably have to use them in 'private battle's' to get any kind of fair rules for them. Think ive got a pdf or word file of a codex for them somewhere, want me to see if i can find it? (dunno whether it would be against forum rules - hence not sticking it up anyway!) its got basic stats and rules, and a back story, but i dont think its official??

Some people just use them with the IG codex. In fact they would work better with the Space Marine codex. Bolters, rhinos (the squats actually invented the Rhino according to ancient fluff), indestructable armour, high toughness, bikes... Definitely Space Marine rules.

a) Once there were rules for squats and a miniature range b) Squats are not the Demiurg and not allied with the Tau. Actually the Squat Homeworld is still part of the Empire c) like boba said Space Marine rules d) the 40k and WHFB races are the same because they're sharing the same universe, and the FB planet has to be somewhere in the 40k galaxy
