I phoned the red shirts some time ago on exactly the same issue. A heaavy weapons team is ONE mini that has TWO wounds. So if you have the chance you can split the wounds among the squad/heavy weapons platoon as you like (and as long it is legal).

What I love about things with inderect fire is that because i also play warhammer dwarfs i have become very adapt to geuss ranges due to guessing for their cannons. So when it comes to indirect fire give me a mortar squad anyday I can wreak havoc. hehe.

Guessing was fun, and I still ike it. Gives the feeling of reality and that you have to adjust for one or two shots

I have two squads in my HQ as well, and I wouldn't go anywhere without them! It's all about forcing rolls ... no matter what, and the annoyance factor, even against Marines is great. There's nothing like a marine thinking he can't be harmed by mortars, then failing his rolls and losing some. In addition to the mortar teams, add Basilisks! Then you will have close (note that mortars are guess weapons with NO MINIMUM RANGE), as well as long support of the bassies. We also use FW rules, so I throw in Thudders as well. As the waves of my IG roll forward, they are always preceded by artillery barrages, no matter WHAT the range.
Just make sure you have all your templates so they are placed simultaneously!
