Being squishy and having everything shuck me out of my armor I took some time to be clear on the cover saves in the game. On p25 it states that if through line of site if the firer must pass over any obscuring terrain that you get a cover save.
This rule was enforced at the tourney I was in this weekend but it made a lot of people unhappy. I have emailed GW but am looking for more opinions here.
To be clear I am not talking about area terrain but things like a level 1 hill that I may be 10" from but blocks my legs from getting shot. People are unhappy with it because I am not IN area terrain nor am I up against it but it does cover some of my mod. Like I said in the end the judge ruled with me on this but most people run marines and so dont need cover saves like we do.
If I am reading this wrong then please show me how. Otherwise chime in with your two cents.

If the model is standing behind terrain that is only obsuring them and the enemy has to fire over it than YES you get a cover save. It is in the BBB so it must be correct (whether they like it or not). People can get upset if they don't usually play it that way and if you do than it can ruin their plans. Hence your the bad guy. Summary: As long as the model is one size larger than the terrain than you get a cover save if you are standing behind it and they have to shoot over it to get to you. If the model is 2 sizes larger than there is no cover save....eg. Monstorous creature behind a size 1 terrain doesnt get cover saves, but behind size 2 terrain he gets a cover save. Hope than re-enforces that

Explain it to your opponents like this -
If you were running towards an enemy position and there was a small rise between you and the enemy you wouldn't run standing upright like a 40k figure. You'd be crouching or crawling on your hands and knees trying to make yourself as small a target as possible and trying to get the most cover from any terrain. The GW rule takes this into account because the figures are in fixed poses.

That is my argument to. One of the reasons I feel I am getting the look as if I am sprouting tenticles from my ears is what armies dominate the area around me. Usually its marines so most of the time they would just be using their armor saves anyway. It has become habit for them and so now someone come along to break the habbit.
The rule treats every one equally as marines would benifit from it to from krak missiles and plasmas for example. Its just that since eveything takes my armor away (something I am sure you all can relate to) I will take the saves where I find them. After all its only a one side thing unlike area terrain, I wish they would not be making such a stink about this.
Unfortunatly it is looking like they want to make a house rule where it only applies if you are within a certain number of inches. If that does pass I will pack up my IG and just play my chaos marines till I can get in with a group of guys that have more of a grasp of what is going on.
(and because I am bitter I will field lots of plasma weapons just to take their armor away ;D)

don't sweat it, you were at a tournament. sad thing is that people will do the most lame things to get an edge in a tournament if there's no sportsmanship score to worry about. sounds like this may have been the case. I had a guy shadily roll all his armor saves in a place where I couldn't see them without me coming around the table. I didn't want to be rude and ask him to roll his saves (which he basically NEVER failed) infront of me, but I'm willing to bet he was pulling a fast one on me. marines can make alot of saves and on a good game they're nigh invincible, but you should at least be able to kill 1 model in a marine army with all your shooting -_- anyhow yeah, there's alot of beardy gits at tournaments so you need to be assertive (like it sounds like you were) and have no remorse for asking for whats fair. if they don't like it it's they who may pack their crap up and roll on down the trail. if they actually want to play 40k with their own rules around the shop, just go about asking who wants to play by the rules and whoever agrees that 40k should be played with the rules that GW spent the time balancing and writing for the game then those are the folks you should get phone numbers from so you can get a game when you want. I'm sure you'll have SOME opponents left after this house rule mumbo jumbo. good luck none the less bud
