I'm posting this here so that all players (not just IG) can post replies.
Did you ever have a game where one lone (non-hero or character) figure held off against all odds? Even if he eventually died, he still, "made back his points," like 20x over, or was stubborn enough in holding out that it caused your enemy to alter his strategy, giving you the eventual win?
--OR--
Did you ever have a game where one of your opponents figures just would..... not..... die.....
Let's hear about it.
I'll start. Waaaaay back when, I played Black Templars against an ork army and this one wartruk was in the way of my Emperor's Champ. I had to go through it due to the surrounding terrain, and all my "tank-busting stuff" was out of line of sight or destroyed.
Anyways, this one doggone wartruk held my EC up for three full turns, refusing to be destroyed despite all I could do to it... long enough that by the time I did demolish it, the Champ was nowhere near anyone else to fight for the rest of the game even with max movement.
I've hated Speed Freaks ever since...

hmmm, interesting thread, i like! yeah i was playing a white scars army and he had 3 landspeeder tornados, figuring that he would rip my guys apart, i managed to get 1st turn with my lemun russ and autocannon team actually able to get in range and see them. The landspeeders were positioned far righ and my guys were centre left. However, thnigs went all wrong the moment i shot the lemun russ at the speeder in between the 2, which deviated a full 6" away, missing completely. Autocannins, having been armed with sharpshooters i figured would have a better chance......WRONG, some hit but failed to even glance them. His next turn sought the destruction of my lemun russ with a lascannon from a dreadnought!, and the landspeeders started picking of squads on my right, away from LOS from my autocannon teams. He basically flanked my whole army, spraying lead into my guys avoiding LOS from my heavy weapons. It might have been his pure skill or my dumb luck but everytime i tried to shoot at them with a strength 4 or more, they either got shaken or nothing happened! got massacred in the end.....boohoo....

last apoc game i played had an eldar opponent. holy crap i hate the new upgrades the fire prisms can have. i threw 4 lascannons, 3 autocannons, 3 missile launchers at it and none of them were able to knock it out of the sky. they all had sharp shooters and none of them were even able to get a glancing on the thing.

Well, a Captain of Rohan would be considered a hero or elite-type vs. standard footsloggers (goblins), but the game must've still been good! ;D Another hero...... Kasrkin Vet Sgt w/standard Powersword & Hellpistol layout, only survior from his squad. Gets charged mono-a-mono by a full-strength Huron Blackheart. The Stormtrooper shrugged off two turns worth of an ungodly number of attacks to eventually kill the CSM Champ!

Do tanks count? If so......
Me versus eldar 585 points. I had a 4 man platton wiht GL and PLasma and melta, and A LR with hvy Bolter sponsons. Anyway he had a squad of dire avengers a sqaud of guardians with scatter laser platform and a Fire prism with everything totally decked out and a warwalker.
Well first two turns the warwalker, dire avengers, guardians, and autarch went up from battlecannon shots.(and some lasguns). I had 4 guardsmen dead. So I focused everything on the fireprism for like.....4 turns. I finally immoblisised it when we had to go. 4 turns of fire into that mother.
I aslo heard a game where Kharn the Betrayer took 3 baneblades A warhound titan and like a platoon of fire. and lived.....

Fantasy Empire v. Bretonnians
In a battle between my Imperial forces and Bretonnian knights, my General, Wilhelm Nikse's unit of Swordsmen was hit on the bottom of the second round by a unit that included the Bretonnian Lord and BSB with the Banner of the Lady (stripping my rank bonus). The Lord, with some magic thing giving WS 10, challenged General Nikse whom accepted the challenge. Fortunately, the detachment got off the counter-charge.
They went for five rounds of combat and although I lost virtually every round, the swordsmen were able to get amazing break roles. In the bottom of the forth round, the detachment was destroyed and General Nikse was down to one wound. in the top of the fifth, my second unit of Swords with the BSB was able to get in a flank charge on the Knights, and not being in contact with the Banner of the Lady were finally able to bring my rank bonus into the fray. The Bretonnian unit broke, but I was not able to chase them down.
In the bottom of the fifth, a unit of Grail knights hit the General's flank, which held yet again. The Bretonnian Lord's unit rallied. In the top of the sixth, I moved General Nikse over to the flank for support against the Grail Knights, and a well placed cannon shot took out two Knights in the Lord's unit forcing a failed panic check. In the bottom of the sixth, (bases loaded), General Nikse took a final wound from a Grail Knight while the Bretonnian Lord's unit failed to rally and fled off the field.
The Bretonnian commented "At least my Lord is not dead".
"At least my General was not dishonored!"
To the memory of Sir Wilhelm Nikse, General of Nordland.

My commissar once took out a tau etheral. His squad cut down, officer killed, he made his way through the combat and swatted that etheral down, then he smoked a few tau with his stormbolter. Before he finally got eaten in a swarm of kroot, he cut 3 of them apart. Very cool.

I had a single Veteran take down a Demon Prince in CC once. A Sergeant taking down an obliterator with a las pistol. A Leman Russ that refused to die. Pretty much stunned throughout an entire game. A single Jr. Officer rout and sweep 2 full necron squads in CC. Same Officer killed 2 Thousand Sons, 4 marines and Chaos Lord in another game. Same officer took out survived being surrounded my 25+ necron for 4 combat rounds (2 turns) I've long promoted him to my HSO. I've watched again and again as one of my friends CMarines survive 20 lasguns, 2 HB,2AC, and a Hellhound for 2 turns before it finally died. I also had a Guardsman survive 3 lightning claw hits (rolled 3 ones to wound, 3 ones on reroll) Well, thats all I can remember...and embellish

SM's vs Dark Eldar, 1850pts. I had a tooled up mix of SM's designed to counter his Mobility and highly mobile CC strengths. It was against my armies fluff, but we're buds and I just wanted to be a challenge - NOBODY ever beat this guy's list. He took almost all all Raiders or Reavers and Reapers or whatnot, almost everything coming in through the warp on transports and just getting into your backyard so fast it makes your head spin...
Anyway, I had a Whirlwind Castellan that was able to drop a minefield on his warp portal.
His HQ transport comes through the portal, straight 6's all around and he losses all but one model with that minefield due to bad saves.
That same Whirlwind survives the entire battle, effectively channelling some wytches into fire sacks, and just plain beig a headache to the DE player... It eventually being the one who takes out his completely buffed-up and tooled-out DE Lord on a jetbike. But I still lost the game...

I more so have a man of the tournament. I was using a Commissar with Yarrick as the model.
In the first game a nid tyrant charged a squad and survived with only two dying. they stayed in their of course. so my hso and commissar squad charge in with the hso going after some genestealers with his men and the commissar going toe to toe with the tyrant. the tyrant attacks first killing two more men. then the Commissar attacks wounding the mighty tyrant 3 times with his mighty powerfist.
later on in that day i faced an eldar opponent. he had a halry troupe fly straight down the middle of the board and attack the center of my line. he took out two guard squads before i just swamped him with models including the Command squad with my trusty commissar. they roll no rendings on the charge and only 2 wounds that were not saved. alright right men hold tight! We counter attack and drop 3 of their numbers with my commissar and hso. on my turn 3 squads of guard charge into cc . still the eldar go first and only 1 rending and 2 wounds go unsaved. ha i launch 48 attacks into the eldar with 34 hitting and 17 wounding with 6 going unsaved! Then the commissar comes out and justs bashes the final two into a building with his mighty powerclaw...
SO this young commissar is definetly the star of the game in my opinion

I usually play cityfight terrain, so lots of carnage fast. My opponent once had a steel legion squad with his SM's (don't ask). All of the SM's were mowed down by their falling into every ambush I set up. This squad advanced up this wide avenue straight to my command bunker. None of the were killed. They managed to destroy my Command Squad, a Junior Command Squad, two infantry squads in Close Combat, and a Sentinel, all this time only losing one guy. They never did die. His 2 Rhino's finished off my army, for that I'll always hate Steel Legion.

Dueto his outstanding performance against a 2000 point Khorne force, where he held up the entire army for two turns while I enfiladed it and surruptitiously repositioned myself, my Eversor Assasin, Drang, is now part of every army I play.
And a mention to my sanctioned psyker for killing four terminators with a force weapon.

Last round of the game vs. tyranids, i know i am slightly losing by some points. the anti-tank squads fire at the huge carnifex with T6, 5 wounds, 2+save. he loses 2 wounds only. all other guns have fired or are tied in CC. Then my HSO, his squad fallen to barbed strangler, sees the beast and moves, wounding him with his plasma pistol once(normal rolls until now). he then charges, in that last round, and strikes first. 5 total power weapon attacks. 3 hits. 2x6s! he takes the 200-point beastie down, winning the game! We both look stunned, unable to realize what has just happened.

Mine has to be when my Honorifca Veteren Sergeant and two storm troopers hacked they're way through 2 squads of Tau fire warriors.
They did bite the dust in the end but they won a lot of points and tied the Tau player up for several turns.

Commissar Yarrick taking out 12 gaunts, 4 warriors, and 4 genestealers thanks to that force field. seriously that is the best item in the game.

Not quite in the spirit, there, Yarrick is a hero character with lotsa special rules and gear to assist. Not lessening his feat, but we're wanting to hear about normal joes or plain veterans that just *wailed* on more points than he could ever be expected to do on a normal day, or who stalemated an enemy advance for a turn or two and caused the enemy to get outflanked and ultimately defeated. YEA!
