Hi everybody, I'm new to the forum, but I'm going to jump into the deep end here and post my very first guard army list. Please feel free to criticize it, but be aware that this is the first list I have made for guard. There are also some fluffy reasons I did what I did as well. so here it is!!:

Total: 1699
I was wondering what i could do with the last few points. Any ideas?
My main opponents are tau and marines.
P.S I too think that the veterans are ridiculously overprices here, but i kinda like them how they are aswell, but im still open to any suggestions about them.
Thanks in advance, Rob

I like the look of it, but have a few reservations. Well 1 really and that is the cost of your troops. U've basically gone for the most uber troops available for the IG. Which is fine, I can see what u are doing. I would be slightly worried that u don't have enough troops for a 1.75k force, and that the price per guard will be higher than a sister of battle that has better armour and equipment. Having siad all that, the troops u do have are all tough, with decent armour, so I think it will be a fun army to play with

Welcome to the board :] It's a cool list, though for the points you have very few models (for a guard army). Stats wise you may find they don't quite live up to expectation, but if your willing to sacrifice a little efficiency for fluffyness I totally understand. IMO I would get rid of the chimeras for the grenadiers, get rid of the plasma pistols on the gren. vet sergeants and pick up another squad of stormies or two, more men is better then wargear and a few transports.
You may consider dropping hardened fighters too. You don't really need it against the puny tau, and marines will pummel you in assault anyway. Maybe consider some ratlings instead? They are truly a steal, and a thorn in the side of your enemy that he can't ignore, and will most likely have a hard time flushing out. You can use normal human snipers to represent them if you arent a huge fan of the ratling minis(like me :\ ) If those don't appeal, maybe pick up some special weapon squads, Demo charge/melta/melta is a particularly fun combo I find >:}
Also, your HSO retinue is quite shooty.. IMO you should get rid of his PP/power sword and give him a storm bolter, saves you 15 points there too.
Other then that, looks like it's ready to blow a rather large hole in something, good luck and have fun!

Fatuous:I do agree with you about the troops, the hardened fighters doctrine is coming off so they will be a bit cheaper. Fancypants:Thanks for the welcome, and thank you for your advice. I had considered special weapon squads (the ones i planned actually had the same setup as you suggested) but i had decided against it because i believed that hardened fighters was a must. However, your post has changed my opinion and I will add two squads of demo/melta/melta. The list was a bit lacking in anti tank weapons in the first place. The problem with ratlings (apart from the fact that i dont like the models) is that they would have to replace one of my hardened veteran squads. I will also take some of the wargear off of my squads, but I dont think that the chimeras could go. Thanks again for your great advice, I will post back soon in this thread with an updated list! Rob

Oh yes, WELCOME TBH the best way to test is to get a few games in and see how it all works out. Looks like a fun list. IG are very customisable, so u really can go any direction u like, a massive hoarde, fewer uber elites, lots of tanks, you can try it all. Generally tho I'd try to keep wargear down to a minimum (u do want some tho) and get more troops. Looking forward to seeing ur amended list, I may have a play around with somethign similar

heres a tatic that you proably already use but here it is.
use your demolishers to guard the weaker transports and then rush them up a flank and take objectives or set up the storm troopers in a good position

Drop the normal Leman Russ and get a Baselisk with indirect fire. With the points left over buy a few Sentinals with autocannons. For the cost of two autocannons you can uprade the Demolisher sponsons with plasma cannons. Use the Demolishers plasma cannons to discourage your opponent from coming within the Baselisks deadzone. Possibly drop some units to get a lascannon squad as they give you some reliable AT power. You might have trouble with Tau as specialist IG armies don't do that well against them. I have to use two 40 man platoons loaded with heavy weapons to even be compeditive with Tau firepower. The platoons are really just meatshields to hide the heavy weapons. I tried using carapace on my men when i first played marines and tau after seeing man after man being chewed down without an armour save. For what it costs though carapace is not cost effective and does not really save many men, better to just keep them in hard cover.
The real problem with your list is that it doesn't have a reliable centre unit. The two greanadier squads in thier chimeras are flanking units designed to tackle tough targets like terminaters, holed up whirlwinds and taking objectives. The hardened vets are for causing unprecedented mahem early in the game by infiltrating and slowing the enemy down, but even with carapace they wilt easily under sustained fire. The command squad is the IG's pathetic excuse for a counter assualt unit but i see you have designed it as a fire support squad and doesn't hold the line together. Lastly the Leman Russ's are for blowing permament crators in the table, nothing more. Overall i think this is potentially a good list but it needs some trialing. Hope my 0.02c is usefull.

I sadly must disagree with my estemed colleague Kasrkin, but i must warn you that indirect fire Basilisks min range of 36" makes them useless outside of nuking static firebases, and direct fire Basilisks die pretty quickly.. The list is pretty damn good ,but 1. You really should get some powerfists for your vet. sergents, as they can bleed enemy assault teams if they keep to cover 2.Take of the Heavy bolters on the LRBT with the lascannon. Multirole tanks are too expensive to be worth it. Otherwise your LRBTs are fine. except that 'smokes are slightly pointless as you can't fire and use them (except if you want to use the demolisher as a assault tank 3 Plasma cannons on the Demolisher, its 2 S7 AP 2 shots a turn. 4. fancypants has stolen my thunder here (so the vietcong are safe... for now) but the demo charge-double melta team is a good detterent, though flamers are a better investment as they are a guarenteed hit and your only gonna get 1 shot from your team anyway. 5 .If you had more grenendiers I would advise you took chem-inhalers, as they are the only doctrine that can be used on stormtroopers/grenendiers 6 Since you don't have enough greneniders to justify chem-inhalers, you should take drop troops, as it will allow you to place your demo-charge combat engineers next to the enemies most expensive unit, and reduce them to molten slag. And if your going up against tau some heavy-flamer drop sentinels are dangerous against Armour save 4 armies.
Specificly, Tau are downright vulnerable to droptroops, as they give them very little to use their heavy weapons on as droptroops are too spread out. Go for the fire warriors with your demo-teams and any heavy flamer sents (i'm indulging my ego and deluding myself that my advice has been taken) hit the heavy support stuff with the greneniders squads and have your commander and veterans hold the objective against countersttacks ( Battlesuits and stealth suits in particular.)
Hope that helps.
