Hey folks. The catachans were the first army I ever collected, when i was roughly 11 years old. Given that I was young and (very) inexperienced then I got only what I thought looked cool, and not what would make a winning army. After being annihilated several times I gave up and moved onto a fantasy orc army. I am now older and (I would hope) now be able to grasp tactics better. For this reason I am going to attempt to modify the army into one with the ability to win. This is what a have come up with so far:
Catachan Jungle Fighters
Doctrine Points
Veterans Iron discipline Carapace armour Ogryn squad
HQ
Command Squad: Heroic Senior Officer with iron discipline, a powerfistand and a bolt pistol. 1 veteran standard bearer with a bolt pistol. 1 missile launcher with a crew of 2 guardsmen.
Anti Tank Squad: 3 lascannons.
Anti Tank Squad: 3 missile launchers.
Fire Support Squad: 3 autocannons.
Fire Support Squad: 3 autocannons.
Elites
Ogryn Sqaud: 5 ogryns, 1 ogryn bone ‘ead. Mounted in a chimera with a turret mounted multilaser, a hull mounted heavy bolter, extra armour and smoke launchers.
Hardened Veteran Squad: 9 hardened veterans, 1 hardened veteran sergeant with laspistol and close combat weapon. 3 have meltaguns. 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew. Squad has carapace armour.
Hardened Veteran Squad: 9 hardened veterans, 1 hardened veteran sergeant with laspistol and close combat weapon. 3 have plasma guns. 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew. Squad has carapace armour.
Troops
Infantry Platoon 1:
Command Squad: Junior officer with bolter.1 missile launcher with 2 crew.
Infantry Squad 1: Veteran sergeant, 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew. Infantry Squad 2: Veteran sergeant, 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew.
Infantry Platoon 2:
Command Squad: Junior officer with bolter. 1 missile launcher with 2 crew.
Infantry Squad 3: Veteran sergeant, 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew. Infantry Squad 4: Veteran sergeant, 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew.
Heavy Support
Leman Russ Battle Tank: Hull mounted lascannon, 2 heavy bolters.
Leman Russ Battle Tank: Hull mounted lascannon, 2 heavy bolters.
Leman Russ Demolisher: Hull mounted lascannon, 2 multimeltas.
Total = 2001 pts
I would be hugley appreciative if you could provide me with ways to improve the list. In particular advice on choice/balance of heavy and special weapons would be great. Thanks in advance.

Not trying to bust your balls, but you do know that Catachans have their own doctrines right? What you got here isnt anything like Catachans. Or are you making your own list and just using the models? Theres a problem with that in that you selected Carapace Armor and then you run into WYSIWYG issues. If you model them with Carapace on them, then they stop looking like Catachans.
EDIT: Oh and for the record, I think Catachans are a great list if you play them properly.

Yeah i know about the catachan doctrines but was attempting to use the models with my own doctrines. This is because, with a very large number of infantry it is almost impossible to sneak enough jungle terrain onto the board to allow even a quarter of my force to make use of it. I take your point about the carapace armour. Will consider amending it. Thanks for feedback. Comment further if you can.

Well, honestly, as with any list, you need lots of terrain. For Catachans preferably woods and jungle. If you have a copy of the old Catachan codex, they have a great way of setting up a Jungle map. But that being said, you need to make sure your not getting boned on terrain to get max benefit. Other than that, they are pretty much the same as any other IG list.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and judging by doctriens alone, you can gather that they should be a close range firefight/assault list. Granted, its IG in the assault, but they benefit from Ogryns, moving thru woods/jungle as if clear, the cover save bonus, Space Marine equivilant WS, infiltration, and lots of flamers/heavy flamers.

I have modified the list taking your comments into account. I am now going to use the catachans specified doctrines. The general tactics of the army would be to deploy a main fire base in a large chunk of jungle. I will then pretty much hunker down and shoot the enemy as they approch, making use of the 4+ cover save. Also, i can deploy my heavy weapons teams right at the back of the jungle (more than 6 inches into it) meaning that i can see and shoot them while they cant see me. Once close enough i will put one volly of rapid fire into the enemy and emerge from the jungle with an obcene number of flamers, heavy flamers and ogryns.
Modifed list:
Catachan Jungle Fighters
HQ
Command Squad: Heroic Senior Officer with a powerfist and a bolt pistol. 1 veteran standard bearer with bolt pistol. 1 guardsman with heavy flamer. 3 guardsmen with flamers. Squad has jungle fighters doctrine.
Anti Tank Squad: 3 missile launchers. Squad has jungle fighters doctrine.
Fire Support Squad: 3 missile launchers. Squad has jungle fighters doctrine.
Fire Support Squad: 3 autocannons. Squad has jungle fighters doctrine.

Ogryn Sqaud: 5 ogryns, 1 ogryn bone ‘ead. Mounted in a chimera with a turret mounted multilaser, a hull mounted heavy bolter and smoke launchers.
Hardened Veteran Squad: 9 hardened veterans, 1 hardened veteran sergeant with laspistol and close combat weapon. 3 have meltaguns. 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew. Squad has jungle fighters doctrine.
Hardened Veteran Squad: 9 hardened veterans, 1 hardened veteran sergeant with laspistol and close combat weapon. 3 have meltaguns. 1 heavy bolter with 2 crew. Squad has jungle fighters doctrine.

Not bad. Good idea on tactical use IMHO (especially with Heavy Weapon teams). Now I recommend that you ensure that you get some decent woods/jungle on the table when setting up.
As far as the list is concerned, I would suggest replacing some Heavy Bolters with Missile Launchers in the Infantry Platoons. Missile Launchers are more versitile. Maybe put a HB or a Mortar in the Command Squad of the Platoon, and flamer/Missile Launcher in the Infantry Squads. Special Weapon squads would be very cool with Demo Packs not to mention very fluffy IMHO , very Rambo-esque.

Thanks very much for your comments. They have been helpful. Changes have been made and the army is better as a result, all thanks to you guys. I am tempted by the idea of demo charges but am struggling to find the points. Also i know for a fact they would scatter back onto my platoons, wipe out all four squads and cause them all to flee off the table
