It's an option for the whole squad. And models equipped with hunting lances can't get melta guns.

Its Apocalypse, you can do anything as long as the points are paid. jeremy1391- What did you make the headlight out of? I want some rough riders but i don't like horses so I considered bikes.

Appoc is not quite that liberal. you are still ment to keep things to the rules. it is just that you can take as many units as you want. if a unit is ment to only be aloued one heavy weapon team, then in appoc you can stil only have one heavy weapon team. you can however use appoc to make a new unit which is actaully guards men on bikes. if i was going to sue such a unit, i would give them twin linked stubber n the front, which have these stats (note these are not heavy stubbers) range 24" strength 3 ap 6 type assault give the men on the bikes normall gaurdsman stats, but have +1T. make the unit size about 4 to 9 plus a sergant who can be uped to a vet. alow two guys to take a plasma, melta, or flamer (nades would have too much recoil). allow the unit to upgrade their bikes so that on the charge they get +2 attacks, poosibly say this is scythes on the wheels. as for this actaul model, it looks really good. would be cool to see a whole squad made of them.

You can always equip your squad with special weapons. Those with special weapons just won't be able to gain Hunting lances. 40K runs after the fantasy rules there. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to give a fantasy unit full command unit if you would use the option on spears for example.
So you may take those as specialists, they just won't have hunting lances. Looks like the German version of the codex is better on that point as well again...

P46: ''Up two troopers, without hunting lances, may be armed with one of the following special weapons.''
and
The squadron can replace their laspistol or close combat weap with hunting lances at a cost of ***pts per model.
sounds clear to me.....
either everybody gets hunting lances or none. And if with HL no models can get special weapons that way.

So we simply can go by: Equip special weapons first and hunting lances later...
And with your interpretation the sergeant won't get a his armoury items as well, since he already got a hunting lance...

Yes it can. But it has a hunting lance. Then he can take additional weapons. right? And by the way I'm not saying I am right and I am the best and I know everything I'm just saying what I think. So no hard feeling or whatever on anyone kicking the nuts out of my ideas ok? ;D

It is fairly clear cut, to quote the codex, "The Squadron can replace their laspistols or close combat weapons with hunting lances at xpts per model.", note the use of the word squadron not Roughriders, not any number of models but Squadron in other words the unit as a whole. The costing per model being necercery as Roughriders dont come in a fixed squadrons size.
As noted Special Weapons upgrades can only be taken by models without Hunting Lances, if the squadron has Hunting Lances well thats just hard luck.

Unless the rider's some hardcore dude who can hold the lance in one hand and the special weapon the other.

Rules do state that Rough Riders do gain the extra attack for an additional close combat weapon, as horses steer themselves.
In regards to mix weaponary, if you look at Imperial Army List CD then you can mix Hunting Lances and Special Weapons, in Army Builder 3.1 you can't.
I'd have to get my 'dex to check for sure, or perhaps I'll call Lenton.
In regards to being charged and having to use hunting lance, it only says they may, not have to use, so that might counter your oponent chargeing you with a lesser squad to try and make you waste your lances, but again I'd have to check.

You can of course mix special weapons and hunting lances, stop confusing people... I cant see anywhere that says it cant and the imperial armies army builder lets you so i guess you are wrong on this one..

Okay just read my codex.
" the squadron can replace their laspistols or close combat weapons with hunting lances at +X points per model.
Up to 2 troopers, without hunting lances may be armed with one of the following special weapons - meltagun, plasma gun, fllamer or grenade launcher..." there's other stuff about meltabomb, etc and Vet. Sgts, but it doesn't effect the discussion here.
One thing that the codex mentions and is different in Imperial Army List CD is that the codex says the hunting lance has to be used in the first close combat they fight in a game, after which it can't be used again. In IAL CD it says may, there're may have been an FAQ about it which has been updated in IAL but obviously not the codex. I'd check with Lenton for a difinitive answer on that one though.
You can happily go with your original weapon choice for your Rough Riders.
