hey all; had a great battle vs my eldar friend and his wife again, this time at 850 pts. was a real scrap and I managed to remember to take lots of pics! here's the report:
the battlefield:
woo! got the corner I was hoping for!
wow that's alot of guardsmen! so many I couldn't even fit in my deployment zone ><
forces deployed:
ack! infiltrating genestealers!
and ofcourse the eldar blow up my poor sentinel with 3 vehicle destroyed hits from one salvo of fire!!!
finally I get to go and I charge my conscripts forward to create a buffer against the genestealers being able to consolidate from the conscripts directly into a new melee - but maybe I can kill them with firepower!
a closer pic of the conscripts entering the woods and spotting the genestealers:
pew pew! the genestealers are defeated...but wait..swooping hawks are positioning to come at me now!?
get in the bushes!
an overview shot:
oh noes, that mass of plastic is a brood of 15 gargoyles which move 12" ignore terrain, fleet of wing and can charge too :s
my guardsmen gulp:
here they come!!!
fleet of wing is baaaaad
wow the mighty guardsmen of the Cadian 551st know how to wield their lasguns with bayonets!!! (only a couple casualties from their charge)
and to make matters worse:
my turn to react! CHEYYARRRRRGGEEEEE! waagh?
the ace up my sleeve: I didnt use my officer's leadership for my conscripts after they lost combat to the swooping hawks, which, with -1 for understrength, gave them Ld4..PERFECT! they were wiped..all according to plan muahaha
all hail the hellhound:
definately WAAAAAAAGH!
The swooping hawk exarch was mighty miffed that myhellhound killed his whole squad in one shot and came after my command squad which had been left exposed due to everyone shifting to deal with the nid assault
yes, death followed swiftly for my command hq
decision time...shoot up the warp spiders or try to take out the falcon with the farseer and fortuned striking scorpion squad inside (rerollable 3+ save melee eldar squad of DEATH)...
unfortunately it didnt pay off, I only blew a gun off the falcon due to its holofield. without that wargear I would have destroyed it twice with the fire I put into it!!! (holofield makes you roll 2 dice, pick the lowest for what vehicle damage effect you cause from hits)
big bugs sighted! but at least they want to eat eldar
if I live (which I can see I won't be at this point) then it'll get really nasty against these bugs
the eldar move in for the kill:
and so it was settled.
all in all a great game. fended off 3 waves of attacks from my opponents without losing any critical portion of my army but my hellhounds heavy bolter failed to do any wounds vs that swooping hawk exarch which led to my utter demise as he survived the torching of his squad. the single exarch went on to maim my command hq, fire support, AT squad, and survivors of a line squad without even having to roll one die to save vs a wound. I didnt even get to roll a die to try and hit him(!!) his initiative was so high and he kept on piling 12-18 powerweapon attacks into whatever squad he assaulted it was just rediculous.
the melee vs the gaunts was almost as good as torching that whole squad of swooping hawks with my hellhound. all told, my guardsmen did some serious damage and I was happy with their performance.
