Game one (recon gamma):
The first match was a trench covered map (i'll try to get some pics up at some point) and my opponent was a new space wolf player.
We chose our edges and deployed.
The Russ went to the far left and he countered by setting up a ten man squad of longfangs with two lascannons and two heavy bolters, next i set up my first platoon with one squad on the extreme right, the other to the left and the command squad in the centre left. He set up an all lascannon predator about 8 inches to the right of the longfangs and his other predator with an autocannon and twin heavy bolters about 16 inches to the right of the first. My next infantry platoon had its two infantry squads placed to the mid and centre right flank and the command squad to the very centre.
After some deliberation he placed ten blood claws opposite my Russ and the accompanying squad (out in the open: perfect!) My HQ squad went to reinforce the two squads on the centre-right flank, with my lascannons deploying on the high ground to the right, my missile launchers taking cover in a large crater and the heavy bolters covering from each side of them. His force then completed deployment; an iron priest by the lascannon predator, four wolf guard and a wolf lord opposite my missile launcher teams, supported by a tactical squad. venerable dreadnought to the far right and a landspeeder behind the blood claws. Attempting to counter this threat, i infiltrated my first veteran squad as close as possible to the blood claws with the second ready to intercept the wolf guard.
Turn one:
My turn began with me trundling my russ round the hill it had been sheltering behind as a general advance was sounded on my right flank; two infantry squads supported by my main command squad and shadowed by a veteran squad charged forward. in the centre my other two command squads jogged forwards, all to aware of the foe that lay before them.
With a screech of grinding metal the russ' battle cannon swung round to face the blood claws and fired; vaporising four of them in the ensuing explosion. This was followed up by my veterans and an infantry squad, felling a further three of the young marines. A heavy bolter squad opened up on the long fangs, killing a single one, their counterpart squad achieved notably more success; felling two tactical marines whilst the missiles and the lascannons failed to damage either of the predators.
His turn resulted in the blood claws sprinting forwards, leaping the sheer cliff with little difficulty. Ahead raced the landspeeder, its heavy bolter blazing, felling a single member of the veteran squad. The longfangs turned their weapons on the russ, stunning it and the heavy bolters slew a further three guardsmen from an infantry squad on the right flank. The predators, seeing a potential threat aimed their weapons at the lascannon teams, killing only a single crewman. Ahead surged the wolf guard and the dreadnought.
Turn two:
My plasma gunners rushed forward, intent on destroying the remaining blood claws, on the right my infantry squads entrenched themselves at the end of a long tunnel, determined to halt the enemy at this point, several inches to the right their plasma gun support lay in wait. My heavy bolters and missiles all fired on the long fangs, killing three and achieving little else. Fire from my plasma gunners tore apart the the remaining blood claws, whilst their supporting squad downed the landspeeder.
Meanwhile, my lascannons blazed away at the autocannon predator, stunning it. A triumphant cry from the grenade launcher command squad heralded the death of yet another long fang, and with that my turn came to an end.
The dreadnought surged forward, coming uncomfortably close to the isolated right flank infantry squad and the wolf guard joined the tactical squad in thundering towards my defences, only thirteen inches from my gun line forming three units as the wolf lord left his bodyguard. The predators opened up on my missile launchers, causing a team to be removed. The long fangs also opened fire, doing nothing to my russ and killing only two more guardsmen.
Turn three:
My veteran squad on the left struggled one inch through the wreckage of the land speeder, watching enviously as the grenade launcher command squad managed to advance six inches, followed closely by the plasma gun wielding command squad. With a silent consensus, the centre veteran squad scrabbled out of the trench and sprinted forward. My grenade launchers, russ, heavy bolters and missile launchers all fired at the long fangs, but caused only two casualties (just my luck...) My three squads trying to hold of the wolf guard and the tactical squad opened fire, passing their target priority test and dropping three of the marines, the veterans skidded to a halt at the edge of the trench, spraying superheated plasma at the wolf guard, killing all four of them but losing a man to an overheat. My lascannons once again failed to damage the predator. Things were not looking that good in this sector.
His wolf lord gave a cry of anguish and abandoned his tactical marines, surging towards my veterans. Meanwhile, the dreadnought stomped forward, turned a corner, and came face to face with one of my infantry squads. The tactical marines continued their frenzied charge. The predators opened up on my lascannons, causing three wounds-a single man remained. Meanwhile, the dreadnought incinerated six guardsmen and the assault cannon tore apart a further three, leaving a single grenade launcher facing the mobile sarcophagus. Seven guardsmen were felled from the tactical squads bolters and flamer and the wolf lord killed two veterans with his stormbolter, before charging into the fray, slaying two before they could react and blocking the futile retaliation of the lone remaining veteran.
Turn four:
My grenade launcher command squad hurried to reinforce their allies fighting the tactical squad as the two plasma squads on the left flank scrabbled towards the wolves' deployment zone. My lone grenade launcher opened fire and stunned the dreadnought, with my infantry squad behind it blowing off its assault cannon. Down in the trench my men blazed away, taking out two more tactical marines, unfortunately the grenade launchers did not meet with the same success; totally failing to kill any marines. My heavy bolters killed another long fang, my battle cannon missed and my missile launchers failed to do any damage. With a cry my grenade launchers charged into the tactical squad but were cut down without causing any damage.
His tactical squad then consolidated towards my guardsmen.
The wolf lord and the tactical squad moved towards the guardsmen and fired their flamer and stormbolter, cutting down four of the defenders before charging into the fray, slaughtering my men and consolidating. Elsewhere the predators killed a further two heavy bolters and the last lascannon team, whilst their long fangs yet again failed to damage my russ.
Turn 5:
Once again, my plasma squads desperaately scrambled through the terrain to the deployment zone. Then, with a deafening roar, the battle cannon spoke one last time; killing the remaining long fangs. My heavy bolters and missile launchers fired, cutting down his wolf lord in a murderous volley.
The two predators fired in unison at my missile launchers, reducing them to a single man. Together, the dreadnought and the tactical squad charged into the fray, tearing apart my last infantry squad on the right and consolidating into my deployment zone.
Unfortunately the game had to end there as we were out of time
Result:
A Draw! Just. He had about 276 more points than me, but rules are rules; we left with ten points each.
Game two (secure and control gamma):
Standard forest board with three pieces of forest/ruins in each deployment zone. The four counter were set up along the centre of the board at regular intervals.
Turned out this game would be against a dark angels player (he looked about ten! ;D). He deployed first, putting an empty crusader on the far left with a chapter master next to it, a tactical squad behind the woods about eight inches to the right. In addition, he set up two squads of three bikes in the centre right, backed up by an assault cannon toting dreadnought and a multi-melta equipped attack bike. Between these and the tactical squad were five assault terminators, two landspeeders and a chaplain (i think).
I deployed in a roughly symmetrical fashion, two infantry squads on each side backed up by a heavy bolter squad. My primary command squad was holding the centre woods with my two others holding the right flank which also had my missile launchers and leman russ, whilst my left had my lascannons. My veterans were held back for deep striking.
Turn one:
His crusader trundled forward six inches followed by his chapter master and tactical squad. Towards the centre left objective hurried his chaplain and two land speeders. Three of his bikes sped towards the centre right objective followed by the lumbering assault terminators, towards the far right advanced the remainder of his force. His land speeders opened fire on my centre left infantry squad, cutting down eight men. The bikes and the dreadnought all opened fire on my centre right squad, bringing it down to one man.
My russ trundled from cover and my far right infantry squad with their accompanying plasma gun wielding command squad dashed forward through cover to try and bring the objective within rapid fire range. My battle cannon fired a shell, wiping out three bikers. My missile launchers, hoping to equal that feat stunned his dreadnought and my lascannons followed suite with his crusader. Another biker went down to heavy bolter fire and a land speeder was stunned.
Turn two:
His bikers completed their advance towards the centre right objective and opened fire on my command squad in the woods, killing one. His attack bike sped towards the far right objective and his chapter master and tactical squad began to overtake the damaged crusader. His terminators also continued the advance.
His shooting was fairly ineffective, only wiping out the remainder of my centre left infantry squad.
My first squad of veterans came down this turn, rapid firing at his terminators but doing nothing save kill two of their own number. The missile launchers destroyed the dreadnought, whilst my heavy bolters knocked a land speeder out of the sky and the other was shaken. My infantry on the far right knocked a wound off his attack bike and i killed the final two bikes on the centre right objective. The crusader was once again stunned.
Turn three:
The terminators lumbered towards the veterans with murderous intent as the crusader's two escorts moved another six inches, leaving the tank behind. The chaplain joined the land speeder on the centre left objective. Shooting merely consisted of two casualties to my far left infantry squad. The more dramatic assault phase saw my veterans annihilated and the terminators consolidating towards my command squad.
My missile and grenade launchers moved round to get a better firing arc on his remaining vehicles , my russ lumbered forward to look for a better target and my plasma gun command squad moved closer to his terminators. In addition, my last veteran squad landed about sixteen inches from his terminators. My shooting began with the destruction of the attack bike, this was supplemented by the death of one of his terminators and the annihilation of his chapter master via lascannon.
Turn four:
His terminators thundered closer towards my small, isolated command squad. One that provided a quick and easy route to all my decent anti-tank weapons in my rear lines. Another guardsman was killed on the far left as the tactical squad moving to cluster round the objective with the crusader hurrying to catch up. The assault phase consisted of his terminators annihilating my command squad, he was allowed to move six inches; a move that would bring him into assault range of my lascannons. Miraculously, he moved backwards to continue to sit on the objective!!!
My two plasma gun squads doggedly advanced towards the terminators as my russ rumbled round the corner. My grenade launcher command squad sprinted through the woods, all too aware of the terminators a mere seven inches away. The turret of my russ swung ponderously and fired a single shot that would seal my victory. The shell sailed through the air into the crusader causing it to violently explode. Enheartened by this, my grenade launchers stunned the land speeder again and the terminators were annihilated by my plasma gunners who lost two men due to overheats.
Turn five:
His tactical squad sat on the objective, causing another casualty to my far left infantry squad.
My battle cannon spoke again, killing seven tactical marines and the surviving plasma gunners killed the chaplain; losing another man to overheats. My missile launchers, finally in position blew the last land speeder out the sky as my turn drew to a close.
Turn six
He sat on the objective.
A final shot from the battle cannon saw his marines anihilated.
Result:
Kerching! Twenty points for me!!!
