This was a 60,000 point battle for the lucky 13. This GW sponsored event held out local store at 25 players.
AS the imperial Commander I placed a bid of 20 minutes. The xenos commander bid 9 minutes. I really wasn't taken too much aback at this turn of events as I normally enjoy going second anyhow. The board was 4'x24' with no mans land 12" directly splitting the two sides (see the GW web site for mission objective).
After the imperial side set up we used our first asset... Surgical Raids.
This didn't do too much, but it did remove a couple of the threats. However, when you are talking 30K to a side one vehicle is not going to make that much of a difference one way or another.
So with the research stations under Imperial care with all units deployed we settled ourselves in for the opening salvo from the xenos forces. Repeated calls over the vox channels to reassure the junior commanders that while the opening fire would be harsh and heavy losses were expected the Imperium came through the fire relatively unscathed. By end of first turn the xenos forces moved and captured all the objective markers (the research stations were worth two points each) that were in their deployment zone and those in no man's land.
Objective score end of Xenos turn 4 in their control.
The imperial forces began their move (such as it was with our side able to move only 6" to their xeno's speed- Damn eldar, and nids).
The opening fire had the Emperor's Wrath bassie company firing. With the bassie's set center field we had command of the entire board. The first battery hit the Ork Battle Fortress fuel and ammo and with an explosion took out a large chunk of the orcs that were surrounding it (That is one way to kill off the green tide). The shield generator on that side did little to nothing to protect them from the blast.
The Necrons that were directly in front of the Emperors Fist Leman Russ battle company was taken down severely. One lord (of three) and an entire squad of warriors and Immortals were now battle field debris (Damn res orb and tomb spiders).
The tau scum felt the wrath of the baneblade company. made short work of the tau positions taking out the piranha and one of the Hammer heads.
Across the battle field could be heard the shots of victory as the superior guard and Marine shooting scored massive hits across the board. It was a beautiful sight seeing the xenos scum falling and being trampled by their own troops underfoot.
Objective count Imperial both research stations 4 points
Xenos 4 objectives.
Turn two.
The xenos forces began to shore up their lines as wave after wave of reserves were called forth (just about 10K of points were brought on). The Necron player brought in his Monolith, and more orcs seemed to plug the holes in the line that was just destroyed. The Nid also poured in from no where threatening to over take lines.
Again, the shooting phase of the xenos yielded few casualties as the imperial forces were using the front line vehicles that could handle the heavy fire power being thrown at them as movable cover and taking advantage of the blocked line of sight.
The assault phase took out a few vehicles, it still wasn't enough to break the resolve of the imperial forces.
Objective count Xenos 4
Imperial 4
The second turn of the Imperial brought in about 5K of reserves.
(Having seen that the xenos forces were more than capable of being able to shoot down fliers) The Vulture was activated and brought onto the table. Making a bombing run across the Nid lines. Teh heavy bomb payload making an impressive hold in their numbers. As ichor painted the battle field where they once stood.
The Terminators began teleporting behind the xenos lines and ripping holes into the offensive they tried to build.
During the assault phase the brave conscripts assaulted a Wraith lord (yes, we know they can't do anything, but with the commissar that is a tar pit you don't want to be in.)
Objective count
Xeno's 3
Imperial 4
contested 1
Turn 3
The Xeno's again poured onto the field (another 10K worth of reserves). Again the complete and utterly broken lines of the xenos were once again filled. It seemed that as much as we blew away still more poured onto the table. Flayed one's deep striking, Crisis suits dropping, the lines of the imperial seemed to be threatened.
With xeno's forces emerging within striking distance of the Emperor's wrath 3 Bassie were taken out. We would see how this might effect the morale and effectiveness shortly.
An Orc Stompa emerged the huge hulking battle fortress served to have an imposing posture on the field.
Using its lifta droppa one of the leman russ was dropped onto a command vehicle stunning the crew of the dropped tank and destroying the command tank.
Chatter over the vox in some parts of the field turned grim, but still the morale was hardened as the commissars ensured that the sprits of all the troops were at their highest.
The Assault phase saw Harlequins joining into the fray of wraith lord and conscripts. Striking Scorpions also attacked. In total it took 4 squads of Eldar to finally take out the girls (We had them tied up for 3 turns total. The Commissar only had to encourage the unit once with the help of a las pistol taking one of the two out.)
Imperial Turn 3
With three Bassies short the two remaining battery's again opened fire. More of the xeno's fell. Necrons phased out and the Tau ran from the field for the greater good. Only to be replaced by (late comer to the game) a dark Eldar force.
Pandora's box (the vulture) made another bomb run taking more forces from the next objective.
the Stompa fell spilling from the duct taped sides 20 orcs (three died in hit)
After the Assault phase with more traitor marines, and greenskins falling on the blades of the imperial steel the resolve of the Imperial forces solidified. No xenos would take this field.
Objective count
Imperial 4
Xenos 3
Contested 1
Turn four
The Fortress of Arrogance had an apocalyptic explosion. Along with this explosion one of the research centers fell. Commissar Yarrick survived the blast and with a rallying cry began to lead the troops from the ground.
The Eldar conscript battle continued with the conscripts felling two harlies and a striking scorpion.
Two more Bassie fell to the Traitor marines and melta bombs. Two others were shaken.
Imperial turn four
Imperial forces rallied.
The Hell Hammer was strategically re-deployed to take the place of the Fortress of Arrogance.
With the final blows from the marine guard on the flank they began a push for the center. Heading directly toward the Eldar that were holding a vital objective.
Pandoras Box again made a bombing run across the middle of the Dark Eldar raiders. A lone Ork squad had made it to the remainign research center only to find that the Ogryn were in the way. The squad quickly dispatched the Nob before he could make any impact (This lone nob and his squad took out a squad of Eldar before he was the only one. the assaults were sickening.)
Objective count
Imperium 3
Xeno's 2
Contested 2
Turn 5
With the pitched battle in the center of the board the Eldar held the objective in the center of the board with reinforced position. (Damn Seer Council)
The ORcs secured another objective. Massing into the ruined building and hunkering down for the covering position.
the conscript platoon was finally taken out of action with the wounded commissar assisting the fallen seek medical attention. The Eldar knew they had been in a hard fight.
Objectives
Imperial 3
Xenos 3
Unowned 1
Imperial turn 5
Pandora's box made a last bombing run across a Dark Eldar position and left the field to make another pass.
The dark Eldar never stood a chance with the forces of the Imperium devastating their positions and taking over the objective they held
Objectives
Imperium 4
Xenos 3
At this point there was nothing on either side that could contest, nor over take the objectives that were held by either force.
Turn 6 would have been an exercise in shooting as neither force could position itself for an assault to contest or take the others objectives.
The imperial forces with well over 25K still on the field with the remaining forces of the Xenos in control of 3 players (there were a total of 25 players in this battle) it was agreed to end the game with a victory to the Imperium.
concessions made on the imperium were that the Remaining assault marine would have been able to take out the Shadow sword with a melta bomb
Objectives
Imperial forces 4
Xenos 3
Victory to the Imperial forces.
Notes: Kudos have to go out to one of the xenos players. This player was the largest asset the Imperium could ever hope to have. With his deadly strikes and ability to cause vehicles to explode he took out more of his own teams troops than what the imperial forces could reach at that moment. He deserves a hero's toast at the victory celebration.
