well the truth is i got smashed by a gunline guard army it had 3 leman russes in the army and they hit home all the time. i was using eldar and i was trying to get as close as possible as fast as possible. he had first turn and half my army blew up the only people who reached their lines was Kandaras, yriel and a wraithlord! So i've decided to start a cadian gunline army with lots of firepower! ;D Have you got any advice on what to get?

sounds like a great start. can you define what you're planning on buying so far? once we know that, we can offer a lot better guidance as far as what should come next for the different playing styles that guard has to offer.

how about a cadian battleforce, an HQ squad, and a box of cadian shocktroops or stormtroopers.

that'll give you one HQ and if you mix the heavy weapons into the squads you'll get one troop choice and the Russ brings the heavy support.
now you need troop choice number 2 which can be put together in 4 ways
if you manage to get 25 more cadians you can make a seconds platoon
or you can buy a box of 20 shocktroops and make a conscript platoon
or you can take those 20 shocktroops and devide them into a third squad for your first platoon then add a Chimera and make an armored fist squad with the remaining 10
finally you could take the grenadier doctrine and fill up that second slot with stormtroopers
from there its all a matter of more tanks and more guns! (with plenty of men to hold them!)

Grenadiers is a good choice, especially as a replacement for Armored Fist squads. More survivability, more special weapons, higher leadership, and only a 4 point increase per man. Stick 'em in a Chimera and use them to put out any fires coming your way.

i was looking at getting some ratlings as they seem pretty good for their points cost and great at taking out carnifexes and wraithlords what do you think?

Use last chancers instead of Ratlings. They're more expensive, but they can fill up the troops choice (yes, you do lose the other HQ), and can have almost any weapon under the sun, including snipes. Plus, they are great modeling chances. Personally, I wouldn't take snipers, but heavy weapons! Or even better: Heavy Bolters! These are what you want for a gun line army. Lasguns don't have much punch, but a Heavy Weapons platoon of Heavy Botlers can chuck out potentialy 33, S5 AP4 rounds a turn, and 10 lasgun shots. If you really want to pin the enemy, use mortars. You'll kill far more of the enemy. Hope that helps.
