ok so heres the deal
i dont know about you guys but i like to play games with painted models
i mean the glendale gamesworkshop changed their policy a few years ago saying that you dont have to paint your models to play!
i mean might as well just throw the boxes on the board and play with those!
anyway i think it just takes away from the whole hobby and as a result i dont play as much anymore...i only paint
anyway, what do you guys think about this?

Huh? Not ever here. In my local GW you need to have all your minis painted with at least 3 colours to use them. Only exception are minis you just bought and that are only FULLY assembled yet. (sure thing, that you can't finish them in that short time).

What??? I don't think itis a good idea to put unpainted models on the table (except if your whole army is not finished yet and so on..). That's strange from a GW shop to encourage people playing with "raw" models...they should encourage people painting, it is very, very pleasant to play with painted models...If not I don't see the point! In that case GW should sell already assembled and painted models for lazy guys!!

You guys would just get frustrated and walk out of the store we play in, then. It's no GW place, so there are no "rules" in that area. As a group, we don't cast sideways looks at bare plastic. About half of the fantasy players use almost all unpainted. One of the 40k guys we have has so much mix-mashed painted stuff in his 40k forces it's just funny... He assembles the armies through multiple buys on ebay and the occassional "must-have" purchases from the store - - and never can be bothered to get any kind of matching scheme together, so every army with him is a color-fest. Squads made up of figures sporting up to 4 color schemes and one bare metal leader are actually common with him. Only one guy at our place has a 100% fully painted & flocked base army... and only because he hired me to paint it while he was stationed in Iraq (9,000pts of Tyranids!!) Even MY stuff is not 100% fully painted, and I'm the local paint-for-hire (it's because I keep adding stuff, or stuff drops and busts or chips and needs repair, so maybe I'll get back to it eventually, etc.)

When I was stationed at Fort Hood, the local store there had the policy that you could use unpainted models, however, each time you came to the store to play you had to show at least one more unit painted. That was a great policy IMHO as it allowed guys to play their lists and be gently urged to paint them as well.

I am ot so worried what other gamers do.
I personally will only play with stuff that I have fully painted except for the squad that I am curently in the proces of painting.
I find that if you jsut buy a hole lot of stuff, you tend to not start ever painting it as you jsut dont know where to start.
It certinally dosent make sense for GW to allow unpainted models, people aint going to buy the paints then!
I prefer to play against armys that are painted. I would make a fuss about it if some one jsut never painted stuff. the worst thing was a freind of mine whi hada unit of chaos knights, he needed to buy two more, so for a few games we let him play with some basses. but he never bothered to buy those TWO knights! and he kept saying that as we let him uses basses befor he shoudl still be aloud to.
some people are just plain lazy. painting is half the hobby!

yeah i agree...the whole point of warhammer is 1/2 painting and 1/2 gaming!
i dont think you feel the full experience if its not painted. if its not painted it isnt visually stimulating

I personally, cant find any good amount of time to paint. Its not that I dont want to but I just cant find the time. I agree it is amazing to fight with fully painted armies but to be truthful, even in tournaments around here, I have never seen a fully painted army. Now I am of to paint. (seeing as I have time)

I think GW York (UK) has it set very well. As long as there is progress from one week to the next then that is expectable, it takes into account that some people just do not have a lot of time wile promoting the painting aspect of the Hobby.

In our store you can play with unpainted models but if you dont have any painting progress then your guys lose armour saves. I love it when I'm shooting at marines that have a 6+ save. Tournaments they have to have 3 colors and be based.

In our groups, we insist that it has to be painted to play. For those rare time when someone just pops in to play, we laower the leadership or give a morale penalty for the unpainted troops ... they feel "inferior".

That's a good house rule.
I personally cannot stand to play with an unpainted army, although I can, but it makes me feel... icky. *shudder*

i understand if people dont have time....
but.....there are simple ways to paint a whole army in a few weeks...
anyway i just dont like lookin at a lot of grey plastics and shiny metal movin accross the detailed board.
and like i said...might as well just throw the boxes and blister packs on the table and start playin with those! haha

And it's not like they have to be perfect. What I do is I paint them up, then when i have time, I go back and touch them up. It's a good system. Allows you to paint some passable figures, and if you have the chance, make them better.

Playing un-painted minis is like playing un-assembled minis to me. It's a kick in the face to people that bother painting their stuff. Of Course I'm the guy in my group who's goal is to make everyone else feel ashamed of how their models look compared to mine.

At Newcastle they have to be min. undercoated, but if the oppenant wants you to have them full painted, then, they have to be fully painted...

Well thats what its like at my GW and whats the point of playing a tournament or anything if no one has their stuff painted. I mean i can see if you have A unit that you just got and its primed but only if its one unit.

Hmm. It used to be the case at my GW, that you must have them fully painted, but...its not the case anymore. I guess as the years drag on the rules get more soft, soon we'll be playing with the bloody sprued models!

Wow..... You all have painted armies? that's pretty good. At my local store absolutely NO ONE has a fully painted army, not even me. One guy has only ever painted 6 models in his 11 years of gaming.

I wish I could share with you playing in a GW shop but I just cant get there that often seeing as the nearest one to me is an hours drive away and plus I am based in Germany so there is also the lang prob to. I Think its alright to play with some unpainted models but only if the person using them shows some progress each time they come into store.
I think it is alright for someone just starting out to use unpainted models to because as i found out it takes a long time to paint models lol. I dont think I will ever use unpainted models because I paint mine before putting them together lol.

I just started last November so I had the the gray and black army for awhile. Now 80% of my army is painted and i only play unpainted models if I already used all the painted ones.
