I was thinking. There are two HQ choices and (assuming you don't use an independant commissar or techpriest) no one ever uses a second HQ squad. Would there be any reason of doing this?
Maybe have one that's really assault oriented. You know, Priest, Commissar, Vets with Las Pistols and Chainswords and a second squad for hanging back and boosting morale.
Any thoughts?

Psykers and Priests are always advisors and don't take up the HQ choice. Commissars are advisors as well and if chosen as independent, they'Re an elite choice. Techpriests are always elite choices as well. So the only way to take a2nd HQ choice is by taking another HQ squad

I can't believe I had that much of a brain cramp. You're totally right and I don't know how that slipped my mind.
Okay, so yeah, same question applies. Anyone ever take two HQ squads? Is it a valid idea?
Not saying I'm going to or want to or anything, just throwing the idea out there.

I take a second HQ choice, but it is reserved for my Cannoness and her Celestians mounted in a Immolator.
They are more of a CC squad and when they are on the field things tend to get nasty in a heart beat.
I usually don't field her unless I am running at least an 1850 game. We'll see what happens in the near future with the rule changes.
Another option you have is to take one of the special characters, or even an Inquisitor Lord.

I do believe that the guard are only allowed to take one HQ command squad. I think it is set up that way to keep people from maxing out two full support slots.
anyway I'm not an expert but thats how I read it.

ymmot you are correct in that the Guard can not take more than one HSO or JSO in a command slot. However, there Force Org is still available to allow for a Second HQ choice. Which is why you use the allied army HQ, or a Special Character in that place.
Hopefully with the new codex we will see new options for this. Esp with the demon codex giving a bucket load of choices for their HQ choices (many of which are available in multiples.).

Cool, thanks for the input.
My second HQ choice will soon be taken up by my Inquisitor (Inquisitor Jorran Fox...if you want to read about this stuff, check out my army background in the fluff section for the 2nd Kalabran Infantry.)
Any idea when the new IG Codex is slated?

No firm dates, but i would not be surprised if it came out by Jan of 09 if not before. 5th ed is due in Jun or July the SM codex is ready for, if not already at the printers (Read as being slid through the GW mud puddle).
that would mean that the DE and IG codex are in the mix.
With the Codex and Army book for Demons coming out at the same time GW has shown it is feasible to put out more than one codex at the same time. Perhaps, we will see something like that with the DE and IG books. In the mean time I am going to keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks!
It sucks being a former GW employee. I loved being "in the know" of when stuff was coming out and things like that...and the 60% employee discount was nice too.

I have taken the Long Range Scanner as a second HQ in my lone IG-only battle... I lost the game, but it worked out very well for my HV choices until it was knocked out. A bargain for the cost and very useful "unit" there...
