Being new to IG I'm not all that sure on what works and what doesn't in a HQ command squad. So I'd like to see what you guys use,so maybe i can pick up some ideas. So what do you put in your HQ Command squad? And do you take Advisers and/or support units? Cheers!

my command squad is usally the last part i write up. i take a basic JO with Power weapon+plasma pistol (PLASMA!) then i upgrade with points i have left (HSO, refactor, vox, weapons, commis etc) so its really varied.

I tend to keep may army pretty mobile so I don't put the heavy weapons in the platoons like a lot of people suggest. I want my girls to be able to manouver around.
So, with that being said I do like having a lot of HW teams. My HQ looks something like this.
HSO with Power weapon Standard Bearer (Upgraded) (sometimes with a plasma pistol) Medic with plasma pistol Vet Plasma Gunner
Optional Commissar with refractor shield and power fist
Autocannon team Lascannon Team Heavy Bolter team
Sentinel Squad
My secondary HQ is Cannoness with inferno pistol and blessed weapon 4 Celestians and a Vet Superior (Loaded with allowable special weapons) Mounted in an Immolator

I usually fight Eldar so I'm trying out the following Close Combat command squad with the following:
HSO with power weapon 4 vets 1 with company standard
All kitted out with Plasma Pistols and Carapace. This is pricey but gives you a high impact CC unit, unfortunately they cost more per member than an orgyrn squad without the toughness, but with better saving throw and 4 almost-meltaguns (that could kill me at any time!) but what's life without risk.
Other options to trial are:
o The 2-3 plasma and medic option. Very effective. o The 4 Grenade Launcher Squad - ouch. Krak and frag grenades give you 24"range, move and fire, instantkill on Eldar/Tau/SoB - nice.
I find however that the high impact command squad only ever works once, and enemies are pretty quick to kill them off. It's usually safer to keep to 2 high power Special weapons (melta/plasma) or 3 low power special weapons (GL's or flamers) per command squad, otherwise you have no disposable numpties with lasguns to take off when they start shooting.

Support squad are your core of heavy weapons options. You can create 9 heavy weapons teams from every box set ... each has it's advantages and disadvantages.
