I need some major help. I'm building my first terrain pieces, but I'm getting stuck because I don't have any texture paint, and I don't know where or what kind to get.
I hear that you can make it yourself by mixing sand with black acrylic paint, but I'm kind of doubting it will give me the desired result.

I think the technique you may be asking about has to do with painting the terrain/board and then sprinkling sand on the paint while it is wet so it adheres as it dries.
That is about all I can tell you about it - never tried it... I went high-brow with buying a gallon of latex textured paint at a home handyman supply store. I've had it a year or so and though it takes some serious mixing to use now, it is still holding up.
I would guess any decent-sized paint store should carry it.

I know from experiance that the staff at GW stores will do the following to make their boards textured.
Step one: using a PVA glue (You can buy gallon jugs of the stuff from any hardware store Elmers works well) thin it down with water in a 1:1 ratio
Step two: Paint the board with the glue water mixture until a nice even coat is applied.
Step three: Spread sand (A 50lb bag of playbox sand is good and you will in no way use it all) and allow to dry.
Step four: Lift board to allow loose sand to fall (A shop vac will come in handy to salvage this and make mom happy that you didn't make a huge mess)
Step five: Paint a dark base coat, allow to dry then dry brush a lighter color to highlight.
Hope this helps.
