Alright guys here it is... In true noob fashion .
i plan getting into playing war hammer and im going to play an imperial guard army (hence why i started the thread). i've bought a IG codex and read the thing, as well as looked about your boards (i've seen many simular threads but none exactly answering my questions). i was hopeing to bounce my first investments off you guys to see if im missing anything needed for my army to function or falling into any new player stupidity. Also and more importantly am i spending my 400ish bucks wisely. i have only the faintest grasp of the rules of 40k but would like to start my table top education with a inf. based gun-line style Cadian guard army.
my planed buy list: (please excuse the poor listing)
plastic box set of : 20 cadian shock troops x3
Pastic box set of:10 cadian kasrkins x2
plastic box set : cadian HQ squad
Metal set of :two cadian officers (not sure if needed)
the box set called "the cadian battle force"
plastic box set of:3 heavy weapon support squads
--------------------
so thats 80 stormies
one LR tank
20 kasrkins
6 heavy weapons teams
and how should i put them in to use? (conscrips, vets ect.)
or how could my money be better spent? ------

hmmm well thats a good starting list HOWEVER your gonna need another HQ squad to make a legal list I take it you dont under stand ow you need to construct your army list... it has to be 1 HQ choice withc I would recomaned as 1 HQ squad + your 2 HW teams (thus making a legal HQ choice) I would then bulk this up by takeing 39 of your storm troopers as vets (attempt to convert some of them to use plasma guns they will help you a lot you can have 3 plasma guns for every 1 squad of vets^^ just so you know with vet squads and they have a very gd BS) then were to your 1st troop choice for this you will need another HQ squad this means that you get another squad you can use to get kitted up with CC weapons (your HQ squads are the best for this) this will need the last 50 shock troopers you have these can only take one special wep each (IE flamer granade launcher or plasma) this will give you your troop choice then you can just use the 20 kaskrin as your 2 elite choices and your le man russ as your hevy sapport I this means you now have a legal army

I think 80 shock troops along with everything else should be more then enough to put together a legal list, you'll just have to stick some heavy weapons in your infantry squads to free up a few extra guys for you paltoon command squads

For the amount of men you're getting you may as well get two Cadian battleforce box sets.

true, drop your extra heavy weapon pack and one of your boxes of shocktroops and buy a second battleforce, that gets you another Leman Russ for something like $20
also those ruins the battleforce comes with are neat, can't have too many of those.

true I missed that one sry guys but he still needs 2 HQ squads but errrr why does he have to take a HW team out of his hq platton the squads dont effect who you can add to the HQ squad at the top you can still have 50 guys in there and your HQ squad with its atached staff. but if I were you man consider the 9 plasma cun trick in the vetren squads if you go with my idea okay man plasma force noobernatiers (terminators) to take a 5+ invun save insted of there 2+ one so keep them laying on the fire

adding the two battle force...and the two HQ...
commissars/officer units?
and i cant seem to find regular guards men...im guessing its all just a case of what stats i run or is there a difference as far as the models them selves?

The regular Guardsmen are in small sets. My suggestion is to go with 2 battleforce sets, 3 heavy weapon squad boxes and two more more boxes of Cadian Infantry. That'll run you up to a good 80(?) infantry and 12 heavy weapons (14 if you use missile launchers on separate models) The remaining cash needs to be spent on a 15 dollar(rough estimate) blister of officers and accessory units. If you want you can replace the two infantry boxes with Kasrkin boxes but it'll cost you an extra 10 dollars +tax.
My suggestion is to screw the kasrkins and go and buy yourself a tube of green stuff and make yourself some stormtroopers that way. It's generally cheaper to do and you don't have to buy two separate components for them. Green stuff can also make meltas and plasmas out of standard G special weapons that come with the box sets that'll save you 13 dollars for one of each plasma melta trooper that'd come in a blister otherwise.

Unless u really like the HQ command squad models, I would ditch it, and convert ur own SO (the tank commander head makes a gd officer head). All ur command squad needs can be made out of regular IG infantry, then u just need a couple of JOs blisters.

A note on the heavy weapon teams. If you use one "kneeling guy" per weapon you can get twice the amount of heavy weapons per box. His buddy can be just another guardsmen from the squad standing next to him.
I second the motion to avoid purchasing command boxes. Make them out of guardsmen. Yes, the tank commander body is actually a really nice officer model.
A note as well, chainswords can quickly turn into power swords and flamers into meltas with out green stuff or too much time spent per model.

Hell, if you refrain from using the stand from the missile/mertar sprue, you can make bipod mounts for your heavy bolters (note- don't try and be clever and do this with other heavy weapons- my own experiments in this field are that heavy bolters are the only weapon that looks alright with a bipod mount and a lasgun stock/trigger/grip greenstuffed onto the back.)
Look at the Forgeworld elysian heavy weapons to see what I'm talking about.
