I just began considering using conscripts the other day and I have a couple questions: -Do you need to take a command squad like in the regular infantry platoons? -Do all of the squads in a conscript platoon work independently of one another as in the regular infantry platoons?

conscripts are a great counterassault choice, if you don't mind moving them all.

No, they dont work independently, they're one big fat jog of men in green ( or whatever colour scheme you so find fit.) and no, they dont have command squads since no one expects them to survive long enough. And, yes, use numbers to your advantage, you roll on a 2 with X, x being the no. of conscripts you take. Have Fun

When I run my infantry force I usually find conscripts can be quite evil when taken with the independent commissars doctrine. Nothing like a large clump of hardened troops that doesn't want to retreat. Just take warrior weapons and suddenly you got a really big CC force.

If you get a commisar and stick him the conscript squad and give them some flamers (which are more useful than GL because they don't use the terrible BS 2) they make quite the counter-assault unit! or failing that just spread them across your line and give the rest of your men a 4+ save (5th ed of course).

No, no, no, no, and no
Thinning troops is an absolute no go. Unless your opponents don't know about how to use their weapons. I'll shoot you holes in that line and give you horrible leadership modifiers...

Who cares they are conscripts, they are supposed to die, they might as well die doing something like give your men carapace or stopping any charges coming towards your lines, in 5th after the combat is finished you can also shoot the nuts out of who ever killed your conscripts because of the no consolidation rule. The commisar will stop the conscripts from running.

No, no, no, no, and no Thinning troops is an absolute no go. Unless your opponents don't know about how to use their weapons. I'll shoot you holes in that line and give you horrible leadership modifiers... This would depend on how the rules say you have to remove casualties. IF the players are able to remove casualties as in 4th (From anywhere in the unit unless limited by LOS) then a line of conscripts isn't a bad idea since you can remove from anywhere in the line. I however, would not use such a tactic since it spreads a force out to much. I prefer using the conscripts as a block formation. I also prefer the Flamer for the "Squad leaders" 50 Conscripts = 5 Flamers Independent Commissar One large tar pit that can and will take out marines.

The ristriction in the 4th is by LOS and and weapons range. You can't remove any minis that aren't in the weapons range. So if I shoot a hole in your line that way, your troops will most likely run as they got a really heafty leadership modifactor. This trick works really well vs 'nids as you can cut of their synapses net works that way. And afaik they can't run through any other squads. Therefore the unit is removed as casulty...

The commisar will stop the conscripts from running. Interesting Idea, but from what I have seen of the 5th rules, an Independent character WILL be in close combat. GW made sure of that. Its much more risky to try hiding a IC in a swarm of conscripts. Also the adea of the long line giving 4+ cover to friendlies is true, but you then give a 4+ to your opponent. If you use your own men for cover, then I suggest you look into deploying troops to use natural cover. Cover save from structures/terrain are getting better, and they dont cost points or run when put into a pinch. I forsee conscripts hiding in cover while squating on an objective in 5th. They wont be a true 'figthing' unit. They will become a tarpit to take objectives.

I've heard this, and don't quote me, but in the new IG codex the IG will have a special formation they can use to shoot through their own guys that doesn't allow the 4+ save that the enemy would normally get. Anyone else heard anything on this? If its true it should be pretty nice.

Recheck your wound allocation rules in 4th you can remove any model within the range and LOS. When dealing with the 50 strong line of conscripts that is fairly easy to do without breaking coherency of a squad. I, Myself, would not thin the line, but use a block formation. Making it even harder for someone to try and snipe a hole in my unit, and so long as you are able to move between two models you can move between units in 5th(I beleive this was the same in 4th as well. So long as there was enough space between bases you could move.

Your own troops don't block LOS but they confer a cover save to teh enemy and to your own troops.
Is that what we are saying?
And i thought that you can remove from anywhere in the squad.
I am thinking about taking conscripts also, but I am apprehensive because commissars can be picked out as independent characters and killed, so that would be devastating in CC.

with the new rule that is rumored to hit the IG codex the 4 up cover that is usually conferred to the enemy by your own troops would be negated.
You can so long as it meets the requirement of Range and LOS are you able to remove casualties.
IC are going to be easier to pick out, but in order to attack one you still have to be in BtB with them. So, have him in the middle of a block of 50 conscripts and they can't touch him.
