In the current codex our only opportunity to min max was if you did a last chancers regiment. Otherwise, we didn't have the choice to go with the option. Not to mention it was suicide if you tried it without the last chancers.

You could min max with 2 5 man grenadier options. Then max out with elites, sentinel, HWT's and Armour. Thus your total troops were 10 men.
Mostly for guard, this makes us competitive. For SMURF it just makes them jammy.

I liked the 2nd rules were they had a percentage for each type of unit.
ie. at least 50% of your points have to be from the troops choice. A max of 25% of your points could be spent on elites. and so on................
That way most of your armies had to be troops. So in a 1000pt game 500pt's had to be spent on troops which left you with 500pts to spend on HQ's, Elites etc.
Guess GW didn't want to confuse people by making them work out percentages

If what has been said is true, and that doctrines are being dropped and replaced with platoon based upgrades (chimeras, armor, grav chutes, etc.) then I really don't think it would be much of a problem. I can even see them removing the conscript platoon option and making it a downgrade of the normal platoon (to save space?). I can see the trend towards simplification from the rumors on warseer. Space Marines seem to be getting buffed though.
As for GW's hatred towards the Guard, I really don't think such is the case. I mean look at the Dark Eldar, who are finally getting updated in 2009 from pics I've seen. I think they've been neglected more. As for the plastic Valkrie, that gives the Guard a significant advantage in Apocalypse level games. Although all players can essentially take one for any army by Apocalypse Rules, the Guard can do it perfectly fine and mass flyers, and air support has proven a deciding factor (at least in my games).
And the troops being core again, great idea. I always wanted to max out platoons of Guard Infantry and now I have a reason to do so. Well, besides accompanying my armoured core in Apocalypse. With troops being the only ones able to contest objectives, I really think the Guard have a nice fighting chance.

The FAQ's on the GW website have now been updated to deal with 5th Ed. My problem is that the Armoured Company FAQ does not exist so I have no scoring units!!!!!!! So it is a good job I use the IA list and can take infantry as troops.

um.. from what I know, any troops choice can take and contest objectives, so if you play AC, your tanks are what you use to score lol

Vehicle's don't count as scoring units even if they are counted as a troops unit.

Or you could include AF squads in your AC list.

AF squads are fast attack in the AC list, the armored battalion list from IAv1 has AF squads as troops though.

Don''t panic, it is likely that some kind of storm trooper option will be available in the new dex. Dont start scrapping it yet

Besides, grenadiers stormtroopers can hold objectives.

How do you even know there are going to be Grenadiers in our new codex? don't take things like that for granted.

We don't know for certain that grenadiers or some equivelent will make it into the new dex, but we don't know for sure that they wont either, so for now continue as usual.
I would be suprised if there is not some sort of option to allow either carapace guardsmen, or grenadier style troops, or both in the new dex when it arrives. Dire avengers can be taken as troops for eldar, so it would seem reasonable that GW will not implement a new IG dex that will invalidate current armies. no we can't guarantee that, but I prefer to think positive about it.

Yes, that's it, a positive thinking attitude is a good thing to have.
I can't really see GW dropping the Grenadiers doctrine. Too many people use it. There would be uproar! uproar I say! same goes for things like Drop troops, light infantry, Jungle fighters etc.

As I have been saying all along. The Doctrines according to the rumors are NOT being dropped. They will be incorporated into the units that are allowed to use such options as unit upgrades.
There is no reason to trash a list, to say that a list is garbage, or not keep your skills up playing such lists. Just be aware that 5th Ed is a whole new animal and will have a whole new feel to how you field and run your army. Anyone who wants to run their army according to 4th ed rules in a 5th Ed game will find that the same tactics may not work, or work as well.

yeah, true, but the new rules favor my mobile, infiltrating infantry and tanks force, tanks are harder, and my grenadiers will be able to shoot more stuff, and hold objectives, if the new plastic valkyrie is nice, i'll get some of those do them up black hawk of the future style and really do the spec. ops thing, until i face orks.... then i want battle cannons, lots of them, and hope they stop the 'running' units. as i say hope they include a storm trooper based army list of ig, cos i have a bit of a (kasrkin) storm trooper fetish... i got bout 150 of the gas masked dudes lol p.s, all painted like master chief lol

Sorry Redmax, welcome to the forums. If you read back about 8 pages it does say. However, we believe the original date penned for the new codex was July 2009. However their is hope and rumour (not unfounded) that GW are aiming for a Christmas 2008 release.
This is what we're all hoping.
