Greetings, fellow gamers.
I'd just recently purchased a 6 x 4 piece of plywood and dragged my friend out of his house kicking and screaming to participate in a friendly game of Warhammer 40,000
My camera is dead ATM, so pictures of the game will be coming later.
Armies:
My Holy Army of the Imperium- (Docs- Sharpshooters, Hardened Fighters, Xeno Fighters, Ratlings, Grenadiers)
4 Squad Platoon, each w/ 'nade Launcher and Missile Launcher, Command w/ Plasma, Lascannon

JO w/ Hon. Imperialis, Carapace, Trademark. Retinue of 4 Vets w/ Carapace, 1 w/ Standard. All armed with Storm Bolters. Fire Support Squad upgrade w/ 3 HB
Hellhound (Demolisher proxy)
8 Hardened Vets w/ 3 Flamers, led by R. Lee Ermey (see commissar.proboards22.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Painting&thread=1324&page=1)
6 Ratlings
Leman Russ w/ Lascannon, 2 HB
Leman Russ w/ 3 HB
Basilisk w/ HB, Ind. Fire
Jon's WAAAGH!-
Big Mek w/ Bosspole, Kustom Force Field
Big Mek w/ Shokk Attack Gun
~60 Shootas w/ Rokkits and Big Shootas
~60 Sluggas w/ Rokkits and Big Shootas
1 Deff Dred w/ Flamer, Big Shoota (bought it during old Codex, dunno if it's still legal)
3 Killa Kans w/ 2 Rokkit Launchas and 1 Kustom Mega Blasta
1 Mek w/ Kustom Mega Blasta and 4 Lootas
~6 Burnas
~10 'ard Boys with Big Shootas.
~6 Tank Huntas w/ 2 Tankhammas
Set-Up-
We rolled for the mission, coming up with a Take and Hold. Since neither of us like totaling up Victory Points, we decided to use only the Infiltrate and Deep Strike rules. Jon (my friend and the painter of the Dred I posted earlier, see ) placed one of his new Trukks in the middle and we called it the objective.
Before the battle started, we decided to do a trial run of the Run rules, seeing as how we were both curious as to its effects on our armies. I didn't know how they were going to implement running into rough terrain, so we decided that the D6 run roll would take into account the terrain's effects.
Set-up was fairly standard. I had a sand-bag emplacement to my left, so I stuck my Platoon Command Section there along with my Fire Support squad, as they had a good FoF to the objective
My tanks I arranged in a three-pronged attack- Bassie to the left, Lascannon LR in the middle, HB LR to the right. The Hellhound went between the two LR, solidifying my right flank. My Grenadier Chimera got stuck to the side of the Bassie, helping my left flank
In the middle of my set-up was a piece of forest terrain I'd been working on. I set up my squads around it, two on the left and two on the right.
(Left and right are from my perspective) Jon set up his Kans around his Force Field Big Mek on the left behind a forest, counting on the Run rule and the shield's power to get them close enough to fire their rockets. He placed his Dred in the middle to waddle to the objective, and stuck his Shokk Attack gun to the right in the middle of a large Abandoned Emplacement (4+ Save) I'd scribbled on a bit of paper. He spread his boys all along the table, sticking his Lootas, 'Ard Boys, and Burnas on my right flank. I think that HH worried him!
My infiltrators set up in rather advantageous spots. R. Lee and his Vets got set up right behind the Trukk, as nobody who wasn't 18" away could draw a bead to him. My Ratlings set up in a crater (4+ save) just to the northeast of my forest terrain.
Jon won first turn. Oh, boy!
Highlights-
1. My hellhound being taking out first turn by two Ork Tank Hunta Rokkits. 6's to hit, 6's on Penetration roll, Vehicle Destroyed. Grrrr.
2. Using my tanks' movement to keep the Huntas confused until I mowed them down with my Command Squad.
3. Being an idiot, I chose to rush the 'ard Boys rather than let him get Furious Charge. My right flank collapsed after that.
4. My vets getting mowed down to the man by 3 Big Shootas. R. Lee will be missed.
5. Jon rolled double 2's twice on his Shokk Gun, allowing me to use it to take pot shots at the Slugga Boy squad behind the Trukk.
6. The Kans and the Mek did pretty much jack on the left flank. I kept taking pot shots with my Lascannon and Missile Launchers, and he kept repairing them.
7. Watching my Grenadiers flee off the board after a failed attack on the approaching Ork Boy's squad. :<
8. He used that same squad to decimate my Platoon Command and Fire Support Squad, then proceeded to attack my Basilisk. I lol'd when I kept inching it back out of CC and firing indirectly at the mob closest to the Trukk.
9. Watching the grand final stand of my Commander, who took on the central Ork Mob after the Lootas and Shook Gun had decimated his crew.
In the end, I won by running the squad I'd placed in the forest at the objective while scooting my Tank up to fire at his central mob. In the end, all of his squads save for the Lootas and the Sluggas attacking my Bassie were under 50% strength, even though they still grievously outnumbered me. I had 2 scoring units within X" of the Trukk, while he had none.
Learning points:
1. Know the objective! Jon still operates on the assumption that to win, you have to kill everything. I won by remembering that I only had to have something viable to rush the Trukk on the last turn.
2. Elites are flashy, but they cannot ever be the backbone of your army. Each of my Elites were lost because I tried to use them independently, and they each got slaughtered. The Ratlings did the most use, though, so they still show potential.
3. I love pie. Plates, that is >D I'm gonna love them even more when partials are gone! My tanks performed beautifully, even with the loss of my HH and the eventual loss of my HB LR.
4. Missile Launchers and Grenade Launchers are a killer combination. They can bust open non-Power Armored enemies with ease and threaten vehicles in their own right.
5. I'm looking forward to the loss of Doctrines. I can never remember to use things like Sharpshooters, or even the Standard.
