Good morning, again ;D I would like to know the correct positioning , of infantry, on the board. There is quite a number, of models, for just the "1HQ, 2Troops" start. Here is my problem. If I have a "blow your enemy to chickenbits" force..... 1. Should I have my units close togehter, ( for bonuses etc. ) and buy mortars for the HQs? OR 2. Do I spread apart the units, so all have "line of sight"? I admit, this question is driving me nutty! Though I enjoy the idea of having all those mortars.

Deployment depends on lots of things - terrain, objectives and what army you're up against.
If your opponent has a lot of template weapons (flamers etc) then it's not a good idea to have your men packed tightly together.

I personally prefer "layers" of troops. This gives you the best opportunity to "sacrifice" squads so that your counter attack troops (Conscripts/Orgyrns/Close Combat Command Squad or Rough Riders) can pummel the enemy (or keep them busy if they are really hard.
Meanwhile your troops move to higher ground and repeat the process - I know very "zulu" do it is effective.
A discussion thread highlighted by Turtleboy was to create the following layers:
1) Distraction/Independent Assault layer
2) Troops/Gunline Layer
3) Counter Attack layer
4) Heavy weapon/Support layer
I frequently use my Veteran as a "distraction" which are sacrificed to slow down the charge of Eldar/Ork forces and keep them in the HW sweet spot (3-4 foot) for as long as possible.
Importantly Line of Sight (LOS) will become more important in Ed.5 rules. Currently squad mates can effectively shoot "through" eachother if within 2".
In future any model firing through more than 2" of men/cover etc gives their opponent a 4+ cover save.... at least that's what the the rules look like doing...

As it stands, your best bet here it to occupy as much cover as possible, with your heavy weapons in the heavist cover, the command squads behind cover and the regualr squads either in cover or not. But refrain from bunching.

Ah, more good info! ;D I am aware of the LoS changes coming in the new rulebook, though I do not like what Suneokun posted. I "giving" my opponent a 4+ save? I hope that is not true. I would imagine this not being good for an IG player. I want to blow my opponent to chicken bits, not protect him/her from it! ;D

IF you are playing an IG army you probably won't be "giving" your opponent a 4+ save. SImply due to the IG Platoons being able to shoot through ability that is rumored to be given to us. ALso, something else you might enjoy hearing. There is guard wargear that will allow us to reroll for first turn. Ohh Happy happy joy joy. As for positioning your troops a lot of things need to be taken into consideration. What is the objective of the game, available terrain, what vehicles you have. Remember your vehicles can act as mobile terrain as well. The True LOS rules are being based off your units eye level. Suggest getting a laser pointer to end arguements. You have to see a body part of the enemy. something as simple as 2" of intervening terrain will offer cover. So, a staggered line formation is looking promising X X X X X X X X X X X X X JSO X X X X With the JSO in this position he would get the cover save versus all but a straight on shot. The squads in front and wrapped around his flanks make it impossible to fire at him without having the LOS passing through the other units. The guard are going to always make chicken bits out of the enemy. Of course you do know Kroot taste like chicken right?
