Hey so I've been thinking a while now, trying to decide between what to model next; veterans or storm trooper unit.
Both offer excellent opportunities to customise both how you play and visually how they look (if you're into that sort of thing!) so I done some numbers for vets and for just shy of 140 points you get 10 rock hard guardsmen, 3 plasma guns, a missile launcher (for juicy frag and krak) the ability to infiltrate and a 4+ save with carapace.
With all that rapid fire and BS (granted the plasma might backfire) i'm loving the amount of fire power these guys bring. Anyone care to talk me out of it? ;D

Personally Im toying with 10 vets, sarge with PF, squad shotguns, and meltaguns. Toss in a couple of melta bombs too. Its all up to you in the end!
oh, remember is you want carapace on the vets, you HAVE to give the rest of your army carapace too...

I would say give them Cameleoline but...then you'd have to give it to your whole army. Whatever you do, unless you PLAN on sacrificing the squad for a specific role, I'd infiltrate them into cover and just sit there to blast away at everything in your path. It can be very annoying...

Ah thanks, i forgot about applying the carapace to the whole army... kinda puts a different light on the idea now.
I suppose, like you say, I could infiltrate into cover and keep my head down. Or load up with shotguns, give them 'hardened fighters' and bundle them out of a chimera? definitely a fun day out!
Or how about the laspistol and close combat option? anyone with thought/experience of that? cheers again guys!

Just remember with 5th Ed carapace is not going to be as important as it was in 4th. With the cover saves that you will be getting you can save the points you would spend there and put them into more troops.

Veterans are definitely the better of the two... I'm not sure how long I'm going to be able to ride this rule-wave with the impending arrival of 5ed, but at the moment 10 shotguns, followed by an assault with the sergeant tooled up with HI and master-crafted power weapon (5 attacks on the charge ) normally does the trick, and the majoity of my opponents are mostly power-armoured. But the pistol/CCW combo, especialy on sergeants who already have a bonus attack is a fantastic bonus in close combat. I also have no special weapons (to cut down on points and give maximum shotgun impact) and a heavy weapon. Tacticaly, I use command squads with commissars to boost assaults while my veterans normally hold static objectives so that the rocket launcher can knock out tanks etc. Make sure you get some battle reports up when you've tried it out!

A quick point with using Mordians: I was going to use them as commissars, but after ordering a few i found out they don't fit in. They look 25mm, or at least very slender compared to normal Cadians... certianly so much so that in the end I decided to convert my own from Cadian spares. It's a bit like the way you can't really use LOTR with WFB because the scales are different.

And remember veterans in carapace armor are better then stormies. Also with flank walking in 5th that infiltrate ability is gonna be pretty hot.

Flank walking? Is that a new rule or something? That's what my Chimera is for ha. Ok i dont think i'll waste money on mordians then; maybe vostroyans make pretty cool veteran models to start with, some converting and lots of glue and greenstuff hmmm *rubs chin*

Again, Carapace is not going to be the saving grace in 5th as it is in 4th. You can shield your army with other units to get the same 4+ save that carapace gives you. Save the points cost for weapon upgrades and more infantry units.

[quick off-topic: AddictiveWoz, do you know if the Mordians are actually scaled at 25 or do they just look small? everything else now (ie 4th) is 28 or 1:42, but what about the oldies?]
Back to topic. Carapace armour is an absolute MUST personaly, since one of the highest AP values of any army's standard gun is 5, it negates the Guard's flak armour. Since my main opponent plays SMurfs with bolters, it's worth the abomnible points cost for me.

colonelscipio I agree with you full heartedly for 4th ed. However, with 5th you can create the 4+ save using interposing troops and terrain. Which negates the need in 5th ed games for carapace armor. GUard are more likely to be shot at while having cover from a vehicle or troops in front of them and will be given the 4+ save regardless of carapace armor or not. So, for 5th Ed you can save the points you normally would spend on carapace and give yourself more guns.
