since snipers now use their BS to hit targets instead of 2+ it seems that spec snipers are now junk to me. what do you all think about this?

I've never been a fan of the sniper rifle. If I played against C'tan or a Carnifex heavy army regularly I'd concider getting a few.

Ratlings simply outclass them by far. Spec weapon squads are best with demo charges and either flamers or meltas.

Yeah I think it will be a waste considering you can get ratlings too. Till the new Codex at least. rumors about the new codex are telling that were going To get a proper scout squad with sniper rifles! but these are just rumors.
But there are a couple of things people could take spec squad for: - you have better leadership than the ratlings - the doctrines like carapace armour, cameleoline (same as ratlings), light infantry, drop troops, etc. wich are affecting the spec squad it could make it a different kind of story. - Also guardsmen snipers look much cooler then those strange little fellas, wich why much people use the known ''counts as ratling'' guardsmen. Which I personally prefer.

I agree, the Ratling models are simply horrid.

Ratlings all the way. I've got the old models, prior to the current ones. The quality ain't great, but they ain't CUTE either...
That said, I have to say that sniper rifles are the single most overrated weapon in the game. They may be brilliant in FPS computer games. But they just become a shot fest in this.
That said, ratling will now have a 2+ save if they go to ground... hmmmm ... never were much cop in CC anyhow!

Can models which have been pinned shoot in 5th edition? 'cos from what I understand going to ground means the squad is counted as being pinned...

Th definition of pinned has gone. Effectively if you fail a pinning test you go to ground for the next turn (but without the +1 saving throw) - Nice and neat.

I thought I did read somewhere that going to ground means that they cannot do anything at all for a turn. But I'm not at home now to chekck the rules, so... someone else may do so.

zumbaz you are correct. Going to ground means that you give up one turn.
I am in agreement with the OP as well. The Sniper rule is a Nerf to Snipers in the IG.

Maybe, but there's nothing but the sound of a single shot from a sniper rifle which kills the target instantly with a well placed shot between the eyes!

only to be beaten by a 3+ armor save. at least now we get a chance to bypass that armor with a rending.

spacepuppy what is better rending or TOF
I perfer giving them the dice and telling them to roll. If you have ten snipers hit 8 times 4th Ed they hit on 2's) and wound 5 times against the remains of a 4 man squad you could point to that power fist and say roll the first save. Not to mention he has to make a second one. Chances are under TOF he was going to miss one.
5th Ed you hit on 4's and wound on 4's 6's become rending, but all wounds are allocated by the opponenet.
Meaning that on the 4 man squad you have 5 hits, and 3 wounds (1 rending) your opponent removes one model after allocation and making the saves.
It's all about the dice rolls. Not trying to pull a math hammer, just pointing out that the more dice we make our opponent roll the better our chances are that he is going to fail. Which is why I believe in massive fire power when it comes to rapid fire.
If I am going to be rolling to hit once and wounding once, you better believe it will be with a unit kitted out with melta weapons instead of sniper rifles.
I just like my chances.

Guardsmen 'count as' ratlings are the way to go in my opinion, screw spec. weapon sniper squads.
