I just read something awesome in the 5th ed. rulebook. gone are the days where our enemies can consolidate from one vanquished squad into a new squad. this means we'll have an easier time of getting shooting opportunities vs. our enemies when they're running amuck in our lines chem inhalers is the 5th ed. doctrine of the day

Thank the dark gods that all CSM come with Boltgun, Bolt Pistol, and CC weapon these days and Terminators don't care anyways. Yes, those might become fun days

the only thing to ABSOLUTELY watch out for is letting our opponents get charge range on multiple squads. In the 5th edition rules, you MUST charge ALL enemy units within range if at all possible. I'm gonna re-iterate this fact for a while on these forums, so if you get tired of me saying this, please understand it's just to get the word out well enough but..... In 5th edition, your leadership modifier for losing combat is the number of unsaved wounds the loser took BEYOND what the winner sustained. so if I cause 1 wound but take 7 then my leadership test for all involved units is -6. This is a KILLER since sweeping advance is still in play and guard don't have the most elite initiative. The way around this HUGE disadvantage is thru using the doctrine special equipment: chem inhalers. take that and you never get penalties for morale suddenly instead of being reduced to Ld3 (like in the above example), you STAY AT LD9. This really seems like the only way to survive the melee side of the game in 5th for IG. It also keeps open the method of play which relies on pre-emptively throwing a squad of guardsmen at an enemy to tie his troops up during his own turn. so they break free in HIS TURN allowing you to gun them all down. The addition of 'cannot consolidate into a new combat' means that this tactic is made MORE effective, but is MORE reliant (if not completely reliant) on chem inhalers to actually pull off. The flip side is that you just allow the enemy to move, shoot you, then assault you in his turn and just take the beating, knowing he can't consolidate into a new combat. this strategy is valid but you allow your opponent into your ranks which is just generally bad because it will become increasingly difficult almost immediately to prevent him from making charges into multiple units. with the chem-inhalers/sacrificial squad strategy, you're talking about stalling your opponent's assaulters from the beginning and depriving him of his ability to move, shoot, and make his assault move; instead giving him only the ability to finish off a couple surviving guardsmen and make his consolidation into the open where he may be gunned down further

There goes another ten points instead of iron discipline...
Hell, I'll just suck it up and take the squad ebing wiped out.
This is mercenary guard radio. Home of the demo charge. Home of the bayonet rush. Home of the slowride..

YES, YES, YES, YES, YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
That felt good. That will be the best times ever for my Slaanesh CSM. Assault me all you people out there. Face my I5+ CSM and let me rip you apart when you have to assault me...

I am very excited about this rule change, but I think it is ridiculous that they've kept sweeping advance in there. That is one of the most aggravating rules I can think of.

halcyon as far as I know they still have to stop an inch from your models on a sweeping advance. Anyone with the rule book handy able to verify?

Consolidating models must stop 1" away from all enemy models.

Consolidating models must stop 1" away from all enemy models. Does that include sweeping advances?

see my battle report.it saved my butt.turned 2 "defeat situations" in win in 1 game!!!
guard benefits in 5th: a)no consolidation of enemies.HUGE boost. b)new flamer/blast rules.very good boost. c)2 of 3 scenarios need troops.though guard troops are not good for taking objectives,if guard desn't want someone to have troops left, he simply doesn't -the other guy then plays for the tie.this has been practically confirmed.even in a game where my opponent had 6 troops.taking down troops was never difficult for us-only taking down uber-specialist elites was.ULTRA-HUGE boost. d)run.this is NOT a drawback.most foes had fleet or other mobility already-nids, eldar, dark eldar, orks waaagh!, etc. the only change is that now guard can move away from cc if they really need to-other guy rolls d6, we roll d6. fair-or at least better than before.good small boost, better for objective games. e)tanks damage table:it RULES.period.
