being the warhammer freak that I am I have starting considering Eldar, nothing too serious, maybe something like 500pts
Why? its really simple actually, somebody gave me a wraithlord, I really like the wraithlord model and I'm tickled by the prospect of cutting him all apart and reposing him with a more dramatic flair.
So I have the wraithlord and he is going to be the center piece for this little project, now I'm wondering what else I should get and I think I've settled on a squad of guardians and a squad of dire avengers, and a farseer.
so that should get me my basic block of troops, an HQ and a fancy elite unit.
the plan is to use the gardians as a firebase and the avengers to advance and clash at medium range with my opponent while the wraithlord hammers it out in CC and the Farseer provides support.
later on I might get some Eldar Rangers and Striking Scorpions to add some extra long range and close combat lethality.
does this tatic seem valid in a small battle? do we have any Eldar commanders out there that can offer me any advice?

hello, my name is ymmot and I am addicted to warhammer 40k.
after having receved my free wraithlord I have decided on a small block of troops and a farseer unit to accompany them, like so...
~HQ~ farseer +singing spear +eldritch storm +doom=========103
~troops~ 9 dire avengers 1 exarch +diresword and shuriken pistol==142
10 guardians +bright lance warlock +destructor=145
~Heavy Support~ wraithlord +wraithsword +shuriken cannon=110
total 500
if I'm really impressed by the models(and I'm sure I will be) I'll buy up an eldar battleforce in a few weeks and pad out my list with Striking Scorpions, Rangers, and probabply another Warlock.

Eldar are a great race to play - they're basically all rounders, and excel at just about everything. You might want to get some jetbikes soon (possibly after the new ones come out) as they are great - you can use them to easily destroy squads with a good CC choice (such as banshees) using the crossfire rule - also they can lay down some decent fire and get away quite quickly Depending on what armies you usually play, get the right troops - as I play space marines often, i got Dark Reapers, Banshees, and basically hard hitting equipment. If you play against swarms, get scorpions, lots of avengers kitted out with bladestorm (if you have all 6 troop slots filled in, all 10 avengers + exarch, you could get over 180 shots in on one turn, then assault!). Also Rangers are a great troops choice (or they were, in 4th ed - not sure about them now). Anyway - a well planned Eldar Army is an unbeatable one (take multiple army lists for different types of armies - thats what I do ).

Looks good, but for your farseer:
Both your psychic powers are shorter ranged and offensive, but you can only use one or the other per turn. I would consider dropping one (probably Eldritch Storm as you can't use that and the singing spear) for guide (it's the same points) and then you can guide a unit when you're moving up, then doom a unit when you get close enough and are ready for combat.
Also, if your guardians are going to be a firebase (i.e. stay at a distance) the Destructor on the Warlock could be dropped in favor of something else.

yeah, I played a small game with this list against 500 points of DE, 2 raider squads and 3 jet bikes, with a HQ with warrior bodyguards also in a raider.
I'm happy to say I won, but I did realized that some of the psychic powes didn't mix too well, I think I'm going to tweak it around a little bit for my next 500 point game.( I've been doing a lot of small battles lately to get a full grasp of the new rules in 5th, the DE lost because they didn't have any troops left to hold any of the 5 objectives I split up my avengers into 2 groups of five to have 3 troops total and only lost five of the avengers in the entire battle, though we called it quits while the farseer and the DE lord were still locked in close combat, I'm pretty sure the DE lord would have won if we went on for another round.))

I never really liked the use of special characters in any army below 4000pts, it just doesn't seem right unless they are designed specifically for that, ie a scout commander. Especially if you kill the masters of the chapter, marnius calgar, that librarian, the chaplain and all the honour guard of the ultramarines in one battle.
With eldar you really have to be speciallized against your regular foe, because if you send striking scorpions against SM, its a waste of their points, banshees will do the job 3 times as quick.
You really need close combat support in that army, the dire avengers will hold their own but if the enemy has a lord made for close combat you're doomed unless you can shoot him up. I'd either choose a Autarch or some striking scorpions with scorpion claw (i think they can still get it), this will mean that while the rest of the squad will kill a few of whatever you're fighting, you can rely on the exarch to kill the rest (hopefully).
You could also do with anti-tank support. If I was fighting you with my leman russ, I'd wipe out your guardians, then aim at your wraithlord. After that I'd be pretty much free to roam.

I definately prefer this list, still lacks the close combat support, but the wraithlord and the exarch with diresword should suffice for now.
Other than that a much better list, more antitank support which should take out anything tank you encounter in 1000 point battles.
A nice shooty anti infantry fire base in your guardians and avengers, even smurfs will be destroyed by that many shuriken.
All in all a thumbs up the list.
Never personnally used a farseer, I used an Autarch as my HQ usually (I only had a small army), I prefered him more to be honest. Anyone got an opinion on this, cause one of my friends is just starting an Eldar army, probably will need some help!

I remember looking in my friends white dwarfs back in the day and thinking the old eldar rangers were the coolest, they are pretty fun, can't seem to go for the really brightly colored stuff like harlequins and you can give me a good ol leman russ over a grav tank anytime, they have cool walkers though.
I started painting these guys dark angels green with white faces for the gardians and boltgun metal faces and details on the Avengers, with yellow eyes and various glowly bits on all of them.
I had a lot of trouble painting the head of the wraithlord a nice smooth solid white, I've about decided its as good as its going to get but I'm still not 100% happy with it.

hey everybody! I just about have this project wrapped up and thought I'd share a few pictures. as you can see I only have one more squad of Dire Avengers to paint and then I have my whole 1000 point list, donr feel like expanding it too much further, the other aspect warriors dont do a whole lot for me, neither do gravtanks, I might get some new gardian bikes when they come out, and when that happens I might get a few more war walkers.
