do you think its worth it to make a squad of hardened veterans where all the troops have a pistol and chainsword? or is the ig close combat not worth it?

Don't bother. If you want a couple good IG CC units. Go for orgryns or rough riders. Command squads are good in counter-assaults but use them wisely.

If you want out out of them. Depends, do you want to use them for shooting or assault?

Some people prefer giving them a high leadership officer for the vox-caster and sometimes combined with a long-range heavy weapon or mortar. Some people mount them up for assaults the counter attack any assault units the enemy has to throw at them. And some people use them to take objectives and give them a chimera transport,
What you could do is: try to find out what your normal platoon squads cannot perform, and equip you command squad for just that. Example: alls normal inf platoon squads with heavy bolter and grenade launcher. Next equip the command squad with some AT firepower or ligh AT firepower, by gnving them a lascannon or autocannon
But you can also equip you command squads to furher support some AI firepower.
and, and, a.......
It's just that you can give the command squad all knds of duty's. As long you equip them for that, they'll do the job!
