I used to play Space Marines before I came over to IG. To designate sqauds, I would outline the shoulder pads (how they would be white for veterans) with colors (red, yellow, etc). But I don't really know what to do with IG. There shoulder pads don't have nice outlines, but they are too big (in my opinion) to paint a solid color, since it kind of takes away from the camouflage aspect.
So I am kind of wonder what, if anything, other players do.

you could just paint the bottom line of the shoulder pad in a colour. That's what I'm probably gonna do. Also you could paint their helmets, or give them a numder instead of a colour.

Yeah, I just hand paint numbers in roman numerals. When I get to squad 17 It might be a problem...

I just paint the base with a strip of paint so I know what squad I am using unless it is my conscripts who are half the size (Yes they are GW) of the regular squads.

You can use markings on other parts of the armor, like the helmet, chest plate, or ankle guards

Mine have bare arms, so i use tatoos. 1 stripe=trooper 2 stripes=sergeant 3 stripes=platoon officer 4 stripes=captain. Their platoon is designated by the colour of the stripes.

I use the cuffs of their fatigues. Left cuff is squad designation and right cuff is platoon designation. Gold is command, silver is 1st, bronze 2nd, and so on.

I use the numbers on the transfer sheet to designate squad numbers on one shoulderpad and the imperial symbols to designate platoons on the other shoulder. I also paint the entire underneath of the base a bright colour which makes it much easier to tell who's who.

I name them. I havn't had to break out the phone book yet. Although when I have set squads I think Ill number them, too. And maybe give them pretty colours.
