just as dawn was breaking, the dark angels auspexes picked up massive readings from beyond the lines. the snow orks which had been multiplying over the winter in the extreme north had finally broken camp and surged south for the annual waagh, and here their vanguard hit.
this is a pic of the initial deployment - the mission was objective holds - there are 4 little white archer statues scattered about the table, 2 behind his orks and 2 in front of my dark angels.
"And then there were Orks."
Turn 1 began for my opponent and he brought on a couple buddies to back up the spearhead of orks that had snuck in so close to my lines initially (through the deployment type roll).
Things at the end of the top of turn 1 (my opponent's turn)
Bottom of the 1st turn (my go) saw the arrival of my forces, but unfortunately the whirlwind and devastators were busy setting up and the volume of fire I was able to pour into the onrushing orks was lessened from it. still, some decent casualties were inflicted - about 15 orks went down.
comparison shot to see how things thinned down after the shooting.
"Why couldn't you kill more!? Now it's my movement phase!!"
diving out of the way, that blurry little bit in the background is an ork with a giant snowball launcher slingshot (the ork pie plate launcher) which, by the Emperor's graces managed to catch a stiff wind after launch and deviate into the orks who had dived into the building to the left of the left of red squad. by the old one's design, perhaps, not a single ork died in the blast which hit them full on.
"WAAAAAGH!"
using his waagh to jump in early with his vanguard, red and green squad took a brutal assault - red sustained some moderate casualties and fell back (thankfully!! another good bounce for my left flank) and green squad, not so lucky, was ground under in a tide of orks.
in response to the waagh, the left flank annihilated all but the lone nob in that initial half of the ork vanguard while a combat squad and the command squad rushed in to wage a furious fight to save the lives of the wounded marines of green squad.
striking before the devastators could start taking their toll, the ork rokkitboyz roared in and locked down the remains of red squad and the devastators, creating a brutal fight that was seeing a good number of the dark angel marines go down with wounds of all sorts. the sacred standard was hoisted nearby, however, and the assurance that help was on it's way gave the overwhelmed space marines unbreakable courage to fight on with grim determination.
a pic of the chaplain's 5 hits ALL converting to wounds...yes...he had not only got a chance to warm up on the ork boss and his lackeys in the last attack to clear out the right flank, but he was MAD! this was going to be a long day of setting bones for the Apothecaries.
and consequently, yes...all the ork rokkitboys died before they could swing. such is the power of dark angel veterans led by an enraged chaplain!
with the ork spearhead defeated, those who were able began preparing for the next wave.
note the lack of an additional mob here. the combined fire of the double storm bolter rhinos and the whirlwind took a heavy toll on the orks which set up the dark angels command to drive the final nail in their coffin. the dark angels dreadnought engaged the snow ork snowman (killa kan - it's the big green thing near midfield) and ripped off his melee arm to use as a weapon against the laughable ork contraption.
having cleared out an extra ork mob and buying time for the wounded to be extricated from the field, the dark angels staged a retreat. they'd hewn down a big chunk of orks and a lot of them wouldn't be coming back for more - bolts exploding inside an ork chest tends toward lethal, thank the Emperor. at the end of the day, the angels of death had claimed their price, but given some ground in exchange.
