Sorry guys im a shooty mother fornicateer I take an autocannon in each squad so 2 squads with an autocannon and a grenade launcher and a command squad with a autocannon
Why auto cannons and grenade launchers? Good question, They are cheap as hell 15 for a autocannon damn and 8 points for str 6 and ap 4 nice..... right
I thought command squads were for combat? 1st I like having a different units such as sentinels orygens stormies to take care of the nuts. One officer with a power weapon sucks. 2nd If you disagree with the argument above with 5th ed los rules keeps your officer out of los why your sacrifices and autocannon can fire for eva.
This is a good tatics for some reasons Autocannon most diverse 2 shots at a str 7 and 4 is good for anti troop and tank also can outrange your enemy. You can huddle in the back and shoot hellfire before they can hit back... My opinion camoline goes well cause you can hide in the building can shoot for eva and be safe for fire back upon you

Autocannons are sadly mostly useless against most armies. The only utility they have is as a light-armour hunter, as they can open rhinos and the ilk quite neatly. But other than that, a sharpshooters fire support autocannon squad will statistically kill 1 space marine a turn, three to four of anything that it's shells can actually penetrate. It's only other use is to kill lightly-armoured things high toughness like Avatars and Tyranid warriors or so on.
But as an infantry killer the heavy bolters superior volume of fire simply outclasses it. And even the missile launcher works better against infantry.

I'm packing a lot of autocannons, I like them but I've been tempted to exchange them with heavy bolters more then once, I'm hoding out to see if they might be improved in the new codex, just one more str or ap and I'd be thrilled to bits.

Yeah okay so your saying that around 40 autocannon shots in a 1500 pt army is weak Look yes 5th ed make glancing bs but think of it this way Missle Launchers === do nothin Lasscannon === fornicateing so expensive that you can get only a few and be missing half the time
Also a person who brings 3 monilith is one chezzy ass motherfornicateer any army would have its problems Autocannons give the most fire power against troops and "light tanks" Thats why you get meltas (i know monoliths have that living amor rule) This is the best way to get your troops shooty Im not saying take all troops But for your 2 troop choices if you want em shooty well there you go One lesson from 40k volume of fire power is everthing All those troops firing (both plattoons) thats 12 shots 6 make it 5 wound 2 marines dead 6 lascannons 3 hit 2 wound cover (what dumass doesnt but his marines in cover during a fire fight) 1 dies ...... Same with missles More points for the same kill rate yarrrh Plus new codex rumors autocannons cheap lascanons expensive My imput daka daka

Just a note here, Heavy bolters Will not cut it against Space Marines. I learned this when I forgot to bring any Anti armor at all In a 500 point game... Epic fail

I agree, I like more shots too, but against monoliths, I bet on Lascannons. Anyway, welcome to the forum, we gots a few rules though, try not to double post too much, or curse, because then it makes what you say kinda comical. Thanks. But I do agree, I prefer autocannons against like tau and stuff.

1st of all, autocannons are an all round weapon, it is not very good against anything. It is only good against Transport tanks and dreads, most real battle tanks are armour 13 (most) and that means you can't actually destroy them in the 5th edition (not easily), and if you are using your method of hiding in buildings and shooting you're opponent is not going to be stupid enough to expose the side armour. and therefore autocannons should be at most 1 per platoon, to target those pesky transports and give fire support to you're other squadies.
2nd, they suck against all troops, space marines, you might aswell take a lascannon, and target their, tanks, its a better use of your unit, and use it as a secondary weapon in dire circumstances, as it is just as likely to kill marines, (and marine players who have their god complex don't always put their guys in cover like us normal humans). Tyranid, orks and other swarm armies, the autocannon just doesn't put enough rounds downrange, a rocket launcher is better for this as it doesn't miss, only scatters and it usually kills more. Tau, you might aswell take a heavy bolter because you're still likely to be in range, and Tau suck at long range, (trust me I play tau), so won't hang around their very long, they really excel at very close range because they have lots of short range weapons.
3rd, meltas aren't good enough to give you a good chance of killing the monolith. You really want strength 9 weapons or above. If anything I'd take a Leman Russ Demolisher, Infantry support tank and give the monolith a nice surprise. or if you prefer the long range approach use a basilisk or lascannon.
Autocannons need an upgrade, but their appearance they seem too heavy to be AP4, and AP3 would make them a lot better, at the moment I generally don't see much of a point in them. The shells look like that of the avenger cannon on the thunderbolt, saying it can only go through a scout or tau firewarrior's armour is just stupid, it should be able to blow a space marine to bits.

Huh, I could have sworn tau were good at long range. What with the 72 inch strength 10 ap1 cannons...

Tau are good at long range (I play them to) their main weapon has a 30 in. range, not to mention the buffs they get from markerlights for shooting. IG heavy weapons usually make the Tau cry as they are both longer ranged and burn through their armor.
Getting back to the topic at hand. I usually play my heavy weapons to a good enough standard. What this means is the weapon is not phenomenal against what I am shooting at, but can reasonably wound it. I find the heavy bolter is much better to give to squads and keep the autocannons as more of a specialist squad. The number of shots that a heavy bolter puts downrange helps a lot more. More shots=more possible hits and wounds, which in turn means that the enemy is taking more saves. Even marines will fail a save or two.
Typically I won't shoot a marine squad with a lascannon unless there is no other available targets, too overkill. I look for harder targets such as tanks, APCs, and terminators (in that order) which does more real damage than just frying a marine. I feel that the autocannon is caught in an awkward middle for me, not strong enough to kill a tank, too overwhelming for regular infantry (not to mention the AP isn't good enough to smoke a marine.) So it usually gets left out for the heavy bolter to save points, unless it is a large points game.

IG heavy weapons usually make the Tau cry as they are both longer ranged and burn through their armor. Thats what most people think! but there are only 3 weapons with a range over 36", and one of thems the kroot gun, the other can only be mounted on the hammerhead, and the other is the railgun. I won't deny the rail gun is a great weapon, but to win with tau, you must engage your target at very close range, I've found battlesuits, pirahnas and firewarriors much more effective if you get very close than using broadsides and hammerheads at long range. Well thats my theory on the use of Tau, and it certainly works for me . I'd love to see some fluff on the autocannon, I'm sure it said it used high velocity armour piecing rounds or something. Also I never got why someone would mount it on a predator, they could have easily made a seperate weapon which would suit more being mounted on a tank.

autocannons as mrsocks said, are all-rounders, thats their greatest strength and weakness, they can threaten light armour like sentinels and rhinos, and take down anything short of a smurf, but lack true AT power or AP3

Thats the only reason I like them, they look so awesome, especially the Death korps of krieg ones, where all the casings are flying out, its just like oooooooooooo. Its an exciting weapon in fluff, cause it would make such a cool sound.
I'd love to see a twin heavy stubber heavy weapon, that'd look so cool, it'd be rubbish, but it'd look cool.

how does it work in battle, as a heavy stubber (only sexier looking )
tank was done using a really cheap air brush (bought of ebay only 12 including postage and handling, using a 5 bunnings air compressor ), codex Grey, fortress gray, chaos black and a LOT of luck
