Hi guys ive noticed a lot of forgeworld Leman russ models have been constructed without their sponsons. I think they look much less crowded = better without them but how does this generally translate to the game?
So basically are sponson mounted weapons worth using and what are the general issues involved.
Cheers

When you are dealing with some of the superheavy's it is really up to the person if they want to loose a point of armor on a structure point based model or if they want to keep the higher armor value.
Game play the sponsons are actually tactically more valuable on the smaller vehicles that don't move, or are able to position themselves where they are able to stay still and fire off all the weapons.
Once our codex comes out we are going to have some sort of rule (Perhaps a new doctrine) to give us back the ability to fire the sponson weapons. Even if it is a matter of paying a few extra points to have the fire teams. As it currently stands we are paying the points and not getting a benifit from it.

The new Marine codex allows their vehicles to have the Machine spirit upgrade - they can move 6" and still fire all their weapons. Means my Predators are back on the menu, at any rate. I really hope there is something for our beloved Guard.

But to have the machie spirit comes at quite a cost, and only at a low BS. I thought it was more of a; oh my! im shaken and stunned! its ok the tank will shoot us out of this stick situation..

Sponsons in 5th ed are kind of screwed first off you can no longer have a roming leman russ exterminator with 3x heavy bolters and a twin linked autocannon and fire all of them. You have to remain stationary to do that. So sponsons have their pourpose how ever you need to know when to use tham and when not to. I personaly roll with two LRBT and do use sponsons but if it looks like my tank might get assaulted I would rather move and fire one than give my opponent an immobile target.
