So I'm thinking about taking a full 5 squad infantry platoon and an Armored Fist as my two troop choices. My idea is the mobility of the armored fist gives them the ability to be tank busters. Heavy Weapons Team of a Missle Launcher, Vet sgt with melta bombs and a meltagun special weapon. But is it worth the points? Keep in mind this is for 1500-1850 pt games.

your looking at almost 100 points for that setup if i were to do it i would rather take a squad of vets with 3 meltas and a chimera or a 8 man squad of storm troppers in a chimera with 2 meltas cause then you have a higher BS thus a better chance to blow something sky high. and if you take the storm troopers as grenadiers they count as a trooper choice.

Welcome to the IGMB Trooper Stovrose! Glad to have you join our ranks!
Jass is right. Vets or stormies are much better because they can take more tank killing weapons. I say take Vets, because you can also throw in a missile launcher, which will be great with their improved BS, what with a 50% chance of hitting your target with the krak missile and subtracting 4in from the scatter of the frag missile. (They're fun to model and paint too)
Also, keep in mind, the chimera won't go unnoticed by your opponent, so use cover, move along the edges of the board, and for the love of God, use smoke launchers.
Also, to really screw over your opponent, bring a couple of flanking or deep striking Sentinels along for the ride. Give them an autocannon for soft vehicles (rhinos, orks truks), or lascannons for tanks.

The problem you are looking at with the set up is that you will either have to waste a turn in a chimera that doesn't move, or deploy and waste the turn before you can fire the missle launcher.
This is counter productive for a tank hunter crew. It is far better to go with the vets and melta's.

True. I just take it in case they can't get in range of a target, or if they'll die if they leave cover that turn. It just lets me "reach out and touch someone" every turn if I so choose.

From what I am understanding, the gist is, that a chimera is a generally bad idea? I can understand the idea of taking vet's instead of the iron fist but I can feel a general tone against chimeras in general

Actually it isn't the fact of the Chimera.
Remember that the lasgun can fire at a seperate target from the tank itself.. This in itself is valuable. The fact that you can quickly transport a 12 man unit from across the board is another strong point.
I believe that most people are contesting the value of the armor fist squad over the veteran squad. The Vet squad offers more options overall than the armored fist squad

vets are not troops, but maybe two small platoons over one big mega platoon to fill up your first two slots, then get the vets with meltas in the chimera, or go for grenadiers/stormtroopers.

The Weakness of the Armoured Fist is not the Chimera, it's the Guardsmen
The Chimera is probably one of the best APCs in the whole game, just for the sheer volume of fire you can put out. I just don't like the Armoured fist squad. they are just Guardsmen, even if they come in a pretty armoured package. Put a more effective unit in that package, and the Chimera is a real beast.
