I can remember when they first told us about the new formation.
They were at first called clearing squads.
Our job was to kill renegades, those guys that had become kings of an apartment block or warehouse, total idiots.
The kind who had little faith the planet could hold out after this thing and targeted everything that came near their little "kingdom".
So, they were seen as a threat.
We were dispatched in trucks, half tracks, vehicles that didnt guzzle gas, so we could go on for days, but vehicles quick enough to out run a horde, or to outrun a large group of those insane morons.
We had even heard reports of cannibalism, with food being so scarce over there on the other side they had gone to drastic measures.
Some of them became infected by eating their kills.
So, they resorted to tracking down other survivors, killing them and eating them...
They even raped them in some cases...
But our job was to deal with this scum.
Wipe them from existence.
So we did.
Every so often we would see military outposts, we left them alone, they were doing their job, so we just turned our heads, looked the other way.
However alot of people that joined the squads were sadistic, homocidal maniacs.
They would jump at the chance to kill anybody, more or less anything, alive or dead.
We would hear about them luring in soldiers, trapped behind the lines, promising them safety, but instead taking them to stadiums, courtyards, open spaces...and executing them.
Over time I realised my comrades attitudes were changing, many of them grew insane, many had lost their families to this infection or had lost them to the vigilantes.
Many were out for revenge, out for blood.
But that was a while ago...
The inquisition showed up, abolished that wing of the military...
Put most of us on trial, many were found guilty and sent immediately to the firing line.
But I was lucky, well...not entirely.
My entire family was killed amidst the chaos of this pandemic.
I can only find comfort in the fact that my wife and son had not become infected...
But I was not sent to the firing line.
I was one of the few who had not been classified as war criminals and had been allowed to return to my post as a political officer.
But now.
Now, the wall is down and I find myself running for my life, knowing that the infection is going to spread like wild fire.
There is no way they can contain it, not this time.
They should have known.
Who the hell put those shells there?
It was an accident waiting to happen...
But there had been rumours, rumours of a special, secret weapon that would destroy the infection for good.
It was in the Barrickady tank factory in the core of the city...nobody knew what it was...the most we had been told about it was that it is a parting gift from the inquisitor lord to help us fight the infected.
It wasnt a cure, we know that much...a machine...it must be a tank of sorts...
I was winded.
The passing troops looked at me, I was afraid, damn it I was terrified of what was coming from the breach...
We in the polit bureau had been monitoring them, they were getting smarter, faster, they were mutating as well...
Nobody else knew except for the higher-ups...
No need to disclose it to the men they figured...
But the bastards were getting tougher, they seemed to grow, despite being dead.
This thought, scared the hell outta me.
And I figured I should put as much space between me and those creatures, it was cowardice, but to me, it was survival.
The wind was picking up, my trench coat billowed in the wind as I rank up the street, taking a drag off my smoke I realised the sirens had stopped.
All the houses and buildings were locked up tight.
They got the message.
Tanks, convoys vehicles, columns of men made their way down the street towards the breach...
Valkarie gunships flew over head.
"This must be big..." I said to myself, taking a drag off my smoke...
