This is not a tale of who was the best general. This is not a tale of who had the best luck. This is a tale of who was the least luckiest in the game. Both me and my opponent had horrible luck throughout the battle and it came in tit-for-tat.
My combat doctrines were drop troops, storm troopers, iron discipline, close order drill, sharpshooter. My army consisted of one senior officer command platoon with a commissar and fire support squad, 1 gun line platoon of two squads with missile and grenade launcher and the command squad had a lascannon, one assault platoon with three squads drop troops, one storm trooper squad, and one demolisher siege tank.
His army consisted of a farseer, 2 five man units of dire avengers, karandaras, 10 striking scorpions, 5 warp spiders, 8 or 10 swooping hawks, 1 vyper, D-cannon, and prism tank.
The mission was Dawn of War. My drop platoon and storm troopers did a drop as did his swooping hawks and warp spiders. I had first turn.
Key highlights
-He stunned my demolisher first turn with his prism tank, in return, my 2nd turn, I stunned his prism tank with my lascannon carrying lascannon. (subsequent turn the lascannon was able to destroy the vyper)
- HQ & 1st Squad landed on opposite sides of a mine field right near the dire avengers in turn two (subsequently destroyed). 3rd Squad ended up on my corner table edge and my storm troopers died landing on the tank . In his turn, his warp spiders landed on the far table edge of his deployment zone and his swooping hawks landed on my demolisher tank and were destroyed ;D. (next turn 2nd squad joined 3rd squad on the same corner after I rolled a 12 and landed on his tank again!).
- 2nd and 3rd squad would then fight the warp spiders, 3rd squad being destroyed and a huge volley of lasguns demolishing the warp spider exarch. In return the exarch destroyed 3rd squad in hand to hand before second squad gained revenge.
-scorpion squad and karandaras mulched their way through my heavy weapon squad, 2nd platoon HQ and destroyed all my command squad but the captain who survived with one wound.
-the demolisher tank took a pounding and was immobilised but it earned back its points by smashing the dire avengers (8 of the 10 kill count), 6 striking scorpions and wounded karandaras, 1 warp spider, and the fire prism tank. However, it's plasma weapons never were able to harm the d-cannon.
- The farseer earns the big chicken award for hiding behind the fire prism after losing two wounds to the heavy weapons squad and was not seen in the battle again.
End tally was Eldar 7 IG 6
Overall, sharpshooter earned back it's points with the extra rerolls when I was only throwing ones for everything. Iron discipline came in handy until the vox network began to go down. The demolisher
tank was a beast and though it's short range proved to be a bit of a problem, it really held up well as the center part of my battle line. Drop troops proved an utter disaster and though I can see its uses, I just don't like using it as an integral part of my plan anymore.
