This is awesome!!! I was fooling around with the Elysian list from IA 3, and I made a small combat patrol style list (proxying them with my cadians) I grabbed my old space marines and wrote up and equal list of around 300 points. On the 2nd turn (which I skipped straight to because all my guys were deep striking) I landed an elysian squad next to a marine squad of 10 guys. I threw a demo charge, and wiped out 7 of them all at once. With three left, I openned up with my lasguns and flamer, killing none. It was my brother's turn (who reluctantly agreed to help me test this list and fired both his melta guns, and a bolt pistol, then assaulted. The bolt pistol hit, and failed to wound, but the melta's of course made a pair of smooshy guardsmen. In the assault, he got 7 attacks, 3 of which were power weapons: he didn't wound with any of them, and then I attacked with my 9 attacks (had a veteran sergeant) and killed 2 of his marines. The last one ran away, right off the edge of the table! it was great! it was epic! It was...inspiring! This is a message to all of you who seek to build a drop troops army - don't use the docs in the guard 'dex, buy the hardcopy or pdf (if you can find one!) of the Imperial Armour Volumn 3, and use the Elysians - their equipment is so much better for deep striking than other armies - demo charges in every squad!

IA volume 4 allows you to build an army entirely out of veterans.

yeah I figured that out from another thread, but if you want a bigger force, than Volumn 3 is for the common guard player. The 4th volumn wouldn't be very..."friendly" to a new player.

10-point veterans with flak armour, only 2 special weapons and a host of semi-useless doctrines...
