I'm new to IG and decided to test my miniscule army against some chaos (Which I've been playing for some time). I had 2 squads of guardsmen (That's 2 sergeants, 16 lasguns, and 2 grenade launchers) and a heavy weapons team with Heavy Bolter. My opponent had a much larger force consisting of a raptor squad (4 lightning claws!) and a rhino filled with khorne berserkers. I had to defend my fueling station against the attack.
My opponent went for the blitzkrieg strategy, because he knows IG hate close combat. Somehow my small army managed to hold them off, and I was really proud of both the models I had left. Now I'm glad I chose to start an IG army.

glad that you won, but was it fair point wise, if not and you still won, even better

No, it wasn't nearly equal in points, which is what amazed me. I had around 200 points while my opponent had over 400. What saved me is that I was able to force him through a single entrance point and concentrate firepower on each of his units individually.

I think that is what helped you win - the ability to dictate where his men ended up

just goes to show what overwhelming fire power and some good luck can accomplish, you've learned a valuable lesson, always focus your fire.

Congratulations! I lost a battle that looks closer to it yesterday =/

People stop underestimating our power in close combat. Actually the IG is a better CC force than shooting force as we get armour saves vs marines and such in close combat while we don't get that in shoot outs... Normally my opponents just look confused when I tell them that I charge them voluntarily with all my forces instead of falling back and shooting some more...

while not much for assaulting myself I would agree that a charge straight into the face of death is preferable to falling back to unleash another volly of lasgun fire-only to be answered by rapid fireing bolters or other such nastiness, fix bayonets and charge, never take a step backwards or you've already lost.

Oh you can also do steps backwards, but only with a good tactic and knowledge of the battleground. I don't win my battles with normal IG behavior I win them with ruthless tactics and sacrificing troops whenever I have to
If I would ever just be able to get one award in the 40k universe I'd get the Macharican Cross, but never the Honorificia Imperialis or something else. I'm a tactician, nothing else

I played some Ultramarines last Friday, with no such luck. I took out 2 dreadnoughts and a whole squad of assault marines, but his 3rd Dread and tactical squad slaughtered me. I think what killed me is that my heavy weapons platoon (yes, that's 2 autocannons, 1 heavy bolter, 2 missile launchers, and 1 lascannon) never once killed a marine or damaged a vehicle.

If I ever got an award in 40k, it would be the Medallion Crimson, cuz knowing my luck, I would get shot up...badly! Then saved my some miraculous miracle, as always
