It was my first game using guard and I just dropped into my local gw store and played with one of the staff. I didn't have a legitimate army but that didn't seem to bother him, and he made an army around the same size as mine (we agreed upon 700 points).
I had:
1 Platoon Command
junior officer w/ power fist heavy bolter
veteran medic
attached commissar
attached sanctioned psyker
Squad 1
autocannon
plasmagun
sanctioned psyker
Squad 2
missile launcher
grenade launcher
sanctioned psyker
3 mortar crews
1 Basilisk
1 Leman Russ w/ heavy bolter sponsons and hull heavy bolter
He had:
High level librarian (with squad teleport and small-template blast psychic powers)
Tactical squad
1 veteran sergeant w/ power fist
lascannon
split into combat squad (one w/ lascannon, one w/ sergeant)
Tactical squad 2
veteran sergeant w/ power weapon
lascannon
split into combat squad (organization as above)
1 Whirlwind
We rolled for the mission as annihilation and the set up as pitched battle.
I deployed first, placing my leman russ on the left flank, Squad 1, 2 and the Basilisk on the right flank behind some trees, whilst my command squad held the middle in some ruins with the mortar teams cropped up on some hills.
He deployed his whirlwind on my right behind some ruins which contained squad 1 and 2’s lascannon-totting combat squads. The combat squads containing the veteran sergeants deployed in the middle with his librarian attaching to the one containing the power fist wielding sergeant.
I rolled poorly for my sanctioned psykers powers so they had no real effect on the game.
Turn 1
I began the game by ensuring squad 2 was concealed in cover whilst squad 1 moved toward the ruins containing the two marine combat squads and whirlwind. The leman russ moved up the left flank behind some trees to get into a better position for turn 2. The rest of the army remained stationary.
My shooting was relatively poor due to all the moving, the basilisk and heavy bolter from the command platoon failing to take anything out whilst the mortar squad only managed to knock out one of the space marines hiding in the ruins.
There was no combat to resolve.
The space marines started their turn with the librarian teleporting himself and the combat squad he was attached to behind my squads on the right flank. However, he scattered in front of them. The other combat squad with the veteran sergeant headed straight toward my command squad.
His shooting resulted in the whirlwind killing four men from squad 2 (they failed their pinning test) and the two lascannon combat squads only managing to shake my basilisk. The librarian and his rapid-firing combat squad cut down 6 of squad 1 and their sanctioned psycher but they stood fast.
There was no combat to resolve.
Turn 2
I kept my whole army stationary aside from the leman russ who got in a position where it could target the majority of the space marine army.
Shooting was much more eventful, with the leman russ cutting down all bar the veteran sergeant of the combat squad that was heading toward my command squad. The remnants of squad 1 fired at the librarian and his squad, the autocannon killing two and the plasmagun killing two, leaving only the sergeant and librarian, which held their ground. The mortars and basilisk’s combined fire took out one of the combat squads in the ruins, however the command squad’s heavy bolter failed to take out anyone.
There was not combat to resolve.
The space marine’s librarian left the veteran sergeant to his fate and teleported behind my leman russ, hoping to destroy it with his psychic powers. Both the remaining veteran sergeants from the combat squads moved toward their targets (the command squad and the remains of squad 1), whilst the rest of the army held position.
The whirlwind again targeted squad 2 in the ruins and killed 1, though they passed their pinning test. The remaining combat squad with lascannon again targeted the basilisk but failed to damage it due to cover saves. The librarian also failed to damage the leman russ with his psychic blast.
The power fist-wielding veteran sergeant charged squad 1, which lost 3 after failing to wound him, however the remaining guardsman sergeant held his position.
Turn 3
The imperial guard remained stationary and it was straight onto shooting.
The mortar, basilisk and leman russ only managed to account for four of the five marines in the ruins due to lucky cover saves. Fortunately, squad 1’s missile launcher took out the final marine (carrying the final lascannon!). The command squad’s heavy bolter finally hit home and killed the veteran sergeant charging towards them.
In combat, squad 2’s sergeant was squashed by the marine’s veteran sergeant who proceeded to advance toward the basilisk.
The space marines had precious few men left (the power fist wielding veteran sergeant, librarian and whirlwind), so the movement consisted of the librarian teleporting besides the mortar squad and the veteran sergeant moved closer to the basilisk.
The whirlwind took out 2 men, the sanctioned psyker and a wound off the commissar however they held their ground. In a stroke of bad luck, the librarian blew himself up with a failed psychic blast.
The veteran sergeant tore through my basilisk, immobilising it twice before destroying it for good.
Turn 4
All the space marines had left was the sergeant and whirlwind, both which were taken out by the mortar team and leman russ in this turn’s shooting respectfully.
With that,we called it a game. I was pretty chuffed as it was my first go at 40k under the new rules and had a blast. It also got me painting quicker to try and finish a couple more squads for next time.
