IGMC - Imperial Guard Marine Corps

Every once in a while, the Imperial Guard Message Board gets some Military-Crazy lunatic sweeping through and claiming that they want to build or paint an Imperial Guard force with the appearance of (Insert Favorite Armed Forces Here).

I have come to fulfill that role now.

Hopefully my title didn't drive any Space Marine haters away - I can assure you, I despise SMurfs just as much as the next guy - for this is not a Space Marines themed list.

This is a United States Marine Corps themed list.

Seeing as how I play a light, fast-moving, very aggressive force, and also considering the fact that (upon graduation of High School) I will be joining the USMC, I've found it to be an incredibly interesting idea to start painting a Marine-Themed army to go along with my list.

The first thing to change for my models is the paint-scheme; and that is, indeed, the topic of this thread.

I have some idea's in mind, however poling the Imperial Guard Forums has never failed to yield fruitful possibilities, so I figured I'd see what the greater-minds at the IGMB think. Here is my concept:

I'm sure you all recall this wonderful collection of models painted by IGMB's own Ciaphas Cain.

Taking inspiration from the brilliant scheme used on his models (and also looking at some of the simple conversions that made his Urban Assault Guardsmen so enticing), I'd like to use a similar pattern for the Cadian Flak-Armor and Fatigues that he has devised, but re-apply it using MARPAT (Marine Pattern) colors.

The problem with trying to translate modern camouflage patterns (or real-life patterns in-general) is that the model always appears to be too crowded. That being said, I believe that by using a particular set of colors and painting them as did Ciaphas Cain, I should be able create a miniature that looks good on the table top and resembles the MARPAT-inspired uniform.

I still need to decide if I want Woodland pattern, or Desert pattern, but I have plans for both. The following is a (generic) plan for painting the Imperial Guardsmen to resemble MARPAT marines:

-Graveyard Earth
-[Highlight] Kommando Khaki

Fatigues and Helmet:

I will paint up two prototype models and post pictures as soon as I am able.

Alright, a little bit of an information-dump there, but I'm sure you guys and gals can handle it.

Any thoughts, opinions, or ideas? Anything short of blatant flaming is welcome.

The paintscheme fits, the cause is legitimate....fair enough. Just don't go overboard with the doctrines- these are marines, not Delta Force.

My Cadians use a pattern similar to the current U.S. Military DPM (Or BDU as you guys call it) on the cloth part of their uniform. That is, Regal blue, with an enchanted blue drybrush, followed by a light ice blue dry-brush. Then there's ice-blue camo-srips painted on the cloth part of the unform. The armoued parts are black, and some have codex grey stripes painted on. The scheme was based on one of the urban camo schemes that can be found in the codex (Space-wolf grey I think with black armour).

Basing a scheme on real life camo is a great idea, it just naturally looks convincing. I reckon Catachans would be the best models to use, and my vote goes to the desert style! Remember if you wanna take some artistic licence with the scheme, if something would look better, but isn't strictly 'Realistic', go for it! After all, this is a fantasy army, and 'cool' should win out over 'strictly realistic' any time of the day!

And I've met a few U.S. Marines in my line of work, and they're a good bunch of guys. It's disparing to read that peeps who I doubt have any experience of military life having a 'Our guys could kick the USMC's ass' discussion on that other thread. Wish they'd knock it off.

Rolling Thunder, you couldn't be more right. I'm going to use the same doctrines that I use now, because they fit the Corps well enough.

The issue of doctrines concerning real-world forces is always going to be difficult--when people start to get into personal opinions, biases, and perceptions, things go badly.

Rewolf, that is (more or less) what I am doing--using C.C.'s Painting-Style (Camo-Scheme) but changing the colors to match Marine Camouflage.

While we are on the topic of Doctrines, here is what I usually use for my lists:

-Light Infantry
-Iron Discipline
-Hardened Fighters
-Close-Order Drill
-Cameleoline

I've always imagined the Marines as a force capable of independent, rapid deployment and Maneuver-Warfare tactics. This is explained by my use of Light Infantry.

Iron Discipline (aside from the in-game bonuses--my real reason for choosing it) seems appropriate, considering the fiery spirit that dominates most Marines (leadership in particular).

Proficiency in CQB isn't necessarily a Hallmark of Marine Training or doctrine, but considering the recent stress being put on Marines fighting in the Middle-East (and the Close-Quarter situations that entails) I feel that Hardened Fighters is appropriate. That, and I have a mental-image of Marines being brutal brawlers.

Close-Order Drill isn't really "Marine" per-say, but it works well with Hardened Fighters and its free. During Boot-Camp, there is quite a lot of importance placed on precision on the Parade Ground. COD also fits my 40k fluff.

Cameleoline doesn't really have anything to do with the Marine Corps. I only use it 1500 points and above, and use it because I like the doctrine. If it is making you loose sleep, just tell yourself it is a Marine-Ambush tactic.

I realize Die-Hards, Sharpshooters, Veterans, even Mechanized would fit more easily with the Marines. That being said, I don't use those doctrines. I'm not sacrificing Play-Preference for Real-Life Accuracy.

I like this idea, i am curently debating going to west point for college (the army college, when i graduate ill be a luitenant(sp)!) but i only have one question. How are you going to make up for the lack of bodies? If you are lacking them...
