do you think we will get a free flamer and hevy bolter with our squads like SMurfs do Hell no! If GW loved us that much, we'd have 13 Russes in every army.

Worse case scenario, we get a bunch of named characters that unlock certain doctrines, well as it is already stated in the new SMurf codex, you can take those charaters and model them however you want so long as they carry the same wargear and then simply give them new names, much less customizable but at least it is something to keep in mind.

yeah, you may have to use Gaunt as your new Commissar Lord...
we'll just have to wait for the new codex.

I'm with Aeon on this. I understand what he means, he wants to be able to customise his army a certain way, but have all the options available from the off without having to take a special character along to unlock certain ones.
And I agree. After all, The I.G. is huge, and unique characters would be far, far more spread out than in the Space Marine force. Although I'm not always a stickler for having fluff agree with rules, in this case I think the 'character-unlock' system would undermine the entire flavour of the I.G.
And yeah, you can re-name the special characters but, and I can't explain it, that feels kinda 'wrong'. It feels like you're cheating or something 'cos you know you're character is still REALLY Al-Rahim or whoever. Special Characters should either be generic or optional.

I agree with tombworld. While doctrines was almost completely useless, it still had that element of "creativity" to it. You could have a certain style of army, and it would be your own, even if it sucked. But now, will the Imperial Guard be reduced to having about 11-12 armies or styles of play?

Don't Mock too loud Sq-Ex. If the new codex is simply ... "everything for less points" so we must buy more GW kit to fill our 1750 points Or So very specialised kit that means a list change (different models) for every different army we encounter ... then I'll write my own codex too.

I don't seee why everyone is so worked up about renaming characters to get the army they want. If he does what you need, the idea that he's not joe-shmoe, but i really "commandant schneider " or whatever is semantics, and a little-bit silly to say the least. the marine dex took away chapter traits, and some armies that once existed are no longer fieldable, that's true. BUT, they got ways to do all the major archetypes of marine that existed. you will be able to get a mechanized army, or a grenadiers army, and probably a lot infiltrate or deepstrike if want it, in all likelihood. yes, you may not be able to plunck down your current list as-is, but that's not automatically a bad thing. and remember, if the character system is used a la space marine, those characters are most often cheaper than upgrading each guy for the same ability. you'll likely get more bang for your buck in return for a little less flexibility. Times they are a-changing gentlemen. but instead of getting all worked up in a frenzy, lets wait and see what is revealed to be truth, and what is falsehood before crying sacrilidge.
