My grampa went there, he told me that you should keep your nose out of everything that goes on there and keep your eyes on your wallet.

this is the most important. if it does not concern you do not bother it. remember israel is pretty much at constant war. whether its some nation or some orginization there are soldiers every where and they carry guns. they will not hesitate to shoot on sight if there is any danger towards them. they are allowed to do this as many of the orginizations use children as soldiers and suicide bombers.
are you going for military reasons, buisness reasons or what?
if your going military do not i repeat do not go over there thinking your mister tough gi joe. the israeli defense force are elites and im ashamed to say it but they are above and beyond the US Marine Corps. their martial arts Krav Maga (sp?) is one of the most elite and deadly and they will use it to defend themselves. however make sure that you at least make one friend and you will always have someone protecting your back.
that and please and thank you are your best friends.
remember you are in their home and in their homeland which is also the holy land for many of the israelies. be respectful and learn a few traditions. if you are jewish and wish to visit the wailing wall please make sure you know what to say.
you do not know how much they make fun of many of us jews for not knowing what to say when we visit the wall.
remember nose out of everyones business please and thank you and if a soldier tells you to leave you leave.

The IDF uses conscripts (in for three years) so it's a bold statement to say they are all elite. The IDF train their troops for the type of conflicts they will face and they train them well. They are some of the best urban fighters in the world but I'm not sure how well they'll do in a jungle. The UK has its elite units (SAS, etc) but I wouldn't say that the UK army are all elites. Like UK troops the US train their soldiers for all different types of conflicts in all different types of conditions. I've known a couple of guys on different forums who've served in the IDF. They were guys who just did their bit then got out (one got shot in the ass by someone on his own side). I now guys who've served in the UK forces and in a few cases I'm suprised that anyone trusted them with a gun. The point I'm trying to make is that it's great to have pride in your countries armed forces but to say that the IDF are above and beyond the US Marine Corps is just asking for trouble.

Yeah, well, for a country which is constantly at war, basically since they were a country, and even before that, they have created a VERY formidable military, and its no wonder. I mean, they have been fighting all their lives. Have fun comrade!

Yes most of all enjoy your stay. If you worry much about getting shot...well bad things happen. So relax and enjoy.

Well to those who would like to know. I am going to Israel with a group of People from My church. I am Lutheran a i am 18 years old. I have traveled alot in my life just never been to Israel.
And about the IDF They are an elite because their standard trooper is trained so heavily and they fight with a passion that is beyond our comprehension. They are surrounded by countries who hate them and deny their existence. And about the Conscription, you have a choice u can either say i do not want to fight for religious reasons or i simply do not want to. That is how the system works.
And i completely agree they are specialists trained in the combat that they will face.
Now for the US. We have the Marines they are OUR equivalent to the IDF. In training but as i said before we cannot see the drive that the IDF have. They are the Israeli DEFENSE Force. Emphasis there, they do not travel out of their area because they are in constant conflict. Not to say that our Marines are weak, Far from it just making a point that the IDF deserve respect.
Well i think i will have fun. I found out that i am going to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, the Golan Heights [depending on how urineed off the Syrians are that day]. The Jordan Valley. And a number of other places.
I am actually very excited, i plan on talking with some members of the IDF. And i want to see the middle east for myself instead of letting FOX and CNN show me their modified versions.
And to see the places that my religion roots from. While the places are still here.

I do respect the IDF and they do have there Elite units but not everyone in the IDF is an Elite soldier. Even one of their own commanders complained that to many of his men were unfit and undertrained. Anyway, have fun and stay safe.

Anyone who has seen enough fighting for enough time will become an elite. Much like the veteran troopers the IG have.
Anyway, have fun!
